Flying to Strasbourg is quite easy! The city has an international airport nearby – Strasbourg Airport (SXB). It connects to major European cities. Travelling by plane is a good option if you’re travelling from other European countries.

Strasbourg Airport (SXB) is the closest airport to Strasbourg. It’s located about 10 km from the city centre. Here are some of the cities that offer direct flights to Strasbourg Airport (SXB):

• Amsterdam
• Munich

• Brussels

Strasbourg is also accessible from several destinations outside of Europe. For those coming from North America, you’ll find direct flights from cities like New York and Toronto. Other major hubs such as Dubai, Doha, Beijing or Tokyo also offer straightforward connections to Strasbourg.

Buses generally cost less than trains or flights. A popular choice among travellers is riding with Flixbus. They have routes from many cities, making it easy to plan your journey.

Arriving at Strasbourg Airport, you have a few convenient options to reach the city centre.

The fastest way to reach Strasbourg is by taking the TER train (shuttle train) from the airport. This takes about 10 minutes to the main station (Gare de Strasbourg-Ville). With frequent services throughout the day, it’s a convenient choice.

Alternatively, taxis or rideshares offer a direct ride in around 20 minutes.

• Private Transfer: another great option if you don’t want to stress once you arrive in Strasbourg. I recommend using Welcome PickUps, which ensures a dedicated vehicle is ready upon arrival.
• Car Rental: You don’t need a car to explore Strasbourg. However, it might be a great option if you want to explore the beautiful Alsace region at your own pace. If you decide to rent a car, I recommend checking the prices at DiscoverCars.

When exploring Strasbourg, public transportation is your best friend.

The tram system is reliable and easy to use. It covers the entire city and runs frequently. Tickets are affordable and available at ticket machines.

Biking is another great option. Strasbourg is bike-friendly with many bike lanes. Rent a bike for a fun and eco-friendly ride.

Walking is perfect, too, especially in the charming historic centre. The compact size of the city makes it easy to get around by foot. Choose the option that suits you best and enjoy your visit!

For the itinerary that I’m going to share with you, you should combine walking with riding the tram to the furthest places. For instance, if you wish to visit the European Parliament, use the tram since it’s not located in Strasbourg’s Old Town.

Strasbourg is a city full of charm, and the best place to stay depends on what you want to do. Here are some great areas:

• La Petite France: This area is super pretty with old-timbered houses and lots of canals. It’s a lovely place to walk around and take photos.
• City Centre (Grande Île): Right in the heart of Strasbourg, it’s where you’ll find the famous Strasbourg Cathedral and lots of shops and restaurants.
• Neudorf: If you want somewhere quieter, Neudorf is a great choice. It’s not too far from the city centre and has nice parks and local cafes.
• Krutenau: Perfect for students and young people, this area is lively with great bars and a fun atmosphere.

For example, when I visited Strasbourg, I stayed in Neudor at Aloft Strasbourg Etoile and had a lovely time. It was a quiet area, but still with a few cafés and restaurants nearby. Grande Île is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is part of the historic heart of Strasbourg. Wander through its narrow, cobbled streets and admire the stunning medieval architecture.

One of the most notorious buildings in the area is the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. But, there are more places in Grande Île that you should include in your list of things to visit in Strasbourg. Keep reading to find out!

Place Kleber is the city’s main square. Here, you’ll find bustling shops and cafes, as well as the famous Christmas market in Strasbourg. It’s the perfect place to soak in the festive spirit or enjoy some people-watching during other times of the year.

This square is named after General Jean-Baptiste Kléber. You can marvel at the impressive statue of Kléber himself, which stands at the centre.

One of the top 10 things to do in Strasbourg is visiting the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Marvel at its gothic architecture and climb the towers for panoramic views of the city.

Unlike many cathedrals with two towers, Strasbourg’s Notre Dame Cathedral has only one. Its single, soaring spire makes it even more special.

The tower is 140 meters high, and you can see it from all around the city. This makes it a true landmark of Strasbourg. The initial plan was to build twin towers. But, during the Middle Ages, resources were limited and builders had to adjust and finish the church with one spire.

Inside, don’t miss the astronomical clock—a masterpiece of engineering and artistry. Visit at precisely 12.30 pm to witness the clock’s fascinating animation. The figures spring to life and the procession of the apostles unfolds. This is also when the Cathedral is more busy, so be aware.

While visiting the church itself is free, there is an entrance fee to go up to the tower (8€). You can buy tickets on-site. I recommend going up! You might have to climb 332 steps to reach the top, but the view of the city’s skyline is absolutely worth it.

💡 EXTRA TIP: The Cathedral is open from Monday to Saturday (8.30 am to 11.15 am and from 12.45 am to 5.45 pm) and on Sundays from 2 to 5.15 pm. Check the most up-to-date information about Strasbourg’s Cathedral.

Saint Etienne Church is another gem you shouldn’t miss in Strasbourg. It’s not as grand as the Notre Dame Cathedral, but it has its charm.

The church has a simple and elegant design. Inside, you’ll find beautiful stained-glass windows.

The church is open during the day, and there is no entrance fee. This makes it a nice spot to explore if you’re on a budget.

Known for its impressive Gothic style, this church stands out because of its unique five-nave structure.

The church is home to the grand mausoleum of Marshal Maurice de Saxe – a masterpiece of baroque art. Look up and you’ll see an amazing old organ that has been played by the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!

There is no entrance fee to visit the church.

Saint Pierre le Vieux Church is another interesting place to visit in Strasbourg.

It’s interesting because it’s divided into two parts—one is a Protestant church, and the other is a Catholic church. This makes it unique as you can explore two different styles under one roof!

Originally built in the 7th century, this church has seen many changes over time. Its current look is a captivating blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, giving it a unique appearance that stands out.

Inside, the church is just as spectacular. You’ll find stunning frescoes on the walls, which are paintings done directly on fresh plaster. Another highlight is the ancient cloister. Make sure not to miss it.

Once again, you can visit Saint Pierre le Jeune Church for free.

Palais Rohan is another must-see in Strasbourg, even if you decide not to visit inside.

Built in the 18th century, it’s known for its beautiful architecture and rich history. The building looks so magnificent that it feels like stepping back in time.

Inside this splendid palace, you will find three museums. They are the Archaeological Museum, Museum of Decorative Arts, and Museum of Fine Arts. In these museums, you can see ancient artefacts, elegant decorations, and stunning paintings.

💡 EXTRA TIP: You need to buy a ticket to visit Palais Rohan. Each museum costs 7,5€ but you buy a bundle ticket to visit all 3 museums for 12€. I recommend checking the prices for the museums of Palais Rohan. The museums are open daily (except Tuesday) from 10 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm. On Sundays, they don’t close during lunchtime.

Kammerzell House is one of the most famous buildings in Strasbourg. It was built at the end of the 15th century. Its timbered frame and intricate carvings make it a mandatory stop in your Strasbourg itinerary.

The Kammerzell House is now a restaurant, so you can enjoy a meal while soaking in the history.

Don’t miss the chance to look at the house from the outside when it glows at night. The lights give it a magical feel!

Gutenberg Square is a lively spot in the heart of Strasbourg. It’s named after Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. At the centre of the square, you’ll find a statue of Gutenberg himself.

The square is a popular meeting point for locals and tourists, bustling with activity throughout the day. It’s surrounded by charming cafés and shops.

The square is also home to various events and markets. Depending on the time of year, you might stumble upon a festive celebration or an art market.

Place Broglie is one of Strasbourg’s largest squares. It’s a lively and colourful spot in the city. Many people come here to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

The square hosts events and markets throughout the year. During winter, it becomes a hub for festive activities. For instance, if you visit Strasbourg during Christmas, make sure to check out the Christmas Market in Place Broglie.

Located on the banks of the Îll River, this is one of the most amazing churches you can visit in Strasbourg, besides the Cathedral.

Built in the 19th century, this Protestant church has a unique Gothic Revival style that stands distinct from other churches in the city.

Inside, you will find stunning stained-glass windows that create a magical light display. The church is known for its twin spires, which were designed to make it visible from all over the city.

Like the other churches in Strasbourg, there is no entrance fee to visit Saint Paul’s Church.

La Petite France (Little France) is a charming area in the city and an absolute must-do in Strasbourg. It was actually one of my favourite things in the city!

It’s famous for its narrow cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses. These centuries-old buildings look like something out of a fairy tale. Everywhere you look, you’ll see flower boxes, making the view even prettier.

This area is located by the River Îll. You can stroll along the canals or enjoy a boat ride. It’s a great spot to relax and take beautiful photos.

Les Ponts Couverts is a series of three bridges, topped with tall towers. The towers once served as a defence system.

The bridges date back to the 13th century. Back then, they had wooden roofs, which is how they got their name. “Ponts Couverts” means “covered bridges” in French.

A walk on these bridges gives you a magical view. You can see the canals, old houses, and even the Strasbourg Cathedral from here. The view is especially beautiful at sunset. It is a perfect spot for taking memorable photos.

Located near Ponts Couvert, don’t mitt Barrage Vauban. This serves both as a bridge and a dam. Built in the late 17th century, it’s an engineering wonder from the time of King Louis XIV. The dam was designed to flood the southern part of the city in case of an attack.

The building itself is quite a sight, with a long rooftop terrace. It’s a great spot to view the Strasbourg skyline. Walking across the barrage, you can see beautiful views of the River Îll and the iconic Ponts Couverts.

Inside, you’ll discover sculptures and historical information about its past. It feels like stepping back in time while learning about Strasbourg’s history.

Many locals and tourists visit Barrage Vauban to enjoy serene views and take photographs. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting the city, especially at sunset.

💡 EXTRA TIP: Visiting Barrage Vauban is free. However, please check out their opening hours beforehand, since it changes throughout the year.

Parc de l’Orangerie is Strasbourg’s oldest park. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy nature. The park is large and full of beautiful trees and flowers. There’s a peaceful lake where you can rent a rowboat.

If you want to get away from the crowds, this is the place to be. This could be the perfect place for a picnic. But there are also a lot of activities you can do in the park. For instance, there’s a mini-zoo, a playground, a bowling alley and a tennis court.

The list of what to visit in Strasbourg continues with Palais du Rhin. This is a historical building that looks like it popped out of a fairytale.

Originally built as a palace for a German emperor in the late 1800s, it has a fascinating blend of German and French styles. Today, it houses various government offices, but its impressive exterior is still worth admiring.

This grand palace is surrounded by lovely gardens that are perfect for a relaxing stroll.

Visiting the Palais du Rhin is like stepping into the past while still enjoying the present. The grounds are open to the public, so you can enjoy the beauty of this historic site at your own pace.

Ok, we’re getting to the end of this list. But there’s one thing missing that is actually one of the coolest things to do in Strasbourg.

Did you know you can visit the European Parliament in Strasbourg? It’s located in the European District, which has other important buildings, such as:

• European Court of Human Rights

These buildings are all close together, making it easy to walk from one to another. There are also plenty of green spaces where you can sit and chill.

You can even visit the European Parliament! And it’s even free! Definitely one of the best free things to do in Strasbourg.

I visited when there were no plenary sessions scheduled. You get an audio guide for your phone once you get there. One of the highlights of my visit there was seeing the Hemicycle and observing the city from the Parliament’s rooftop.

• Stroll through the charming streets of Grande Île. Stop at two of the most iconic squares in Strasbourg (Placa Kléber and Place Gutenberg) and admire the many churches in this district. If you’re limited on time, visit Saint Paul’s Church, which is the prettiest. Bonus tip: admire Palais Rohan from the outside!

Afternoon

• Stop for lunch at a local café and savour a traditional tarte flambée, a local delicacy like a thin-crust pizza.
• Head to Petit France, the city’s picturesque quarter. Enjoy a stroll along the canals and capture some stunning photos of this fairytale-like area.
