Kandy is nestled in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, surrounded by lush green hills and tea plantations. It sits roughly 115 kilometres northeast of Colombo, making it a convenient stop for travellers exploring the country.
This historic city is known as Sri Lanka’s cultural capital. It was the last stronghold of the Sinhalese kings before British colonial rule at the beginning of the 19th century.
Its central location makes it a hub for travellers heading to other destinations like Ella or Sigiriya.
If you’re planning a Sri Lanka itinerary, Kandy’s position makes it an ideal stop to experience the country’s rich traditions and natural beauty.
How to get to Kandy
There are several ways to get to Kandy. Whether you prefer comfort, budget options, or a bit of adventure, here’s what you need to know:
Train from Colombo – one of the most popular options
The train from Colombo to Kandy is one of the most scenic journeys in Sri Lanka and a favourite among travellers. The trip takes 2h30 to 3h and winds through lush tea plantations, verdant hills, and charming villages.
First-class tickets offer air-conditioned comfort. Second-class provides an authentic experience with open windows and doors for incredible views of the surrounding hills and tea plantations. I booked my ticket online for 3.2€, securing a reserved seat in second class.
You can also buy tickets directly at Colombo Fort Station, but I highly recommend booking online in advance. Tickets, especially for reserved seats, tend to sell out quickly during the high season. Planning ahead ensures you won’t miss out on this iconic journey.
Bus from Colombo – the cheapest option
Taking a bus is your best option if you’re travelling on a budget. Buses to Kandy leave regularly from Colombo’s Pettah bus station. This includes both standard and air-conditioned services.
The journey takes 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic. While not as scenic as the train, it’s efficient and gets you where you need to go.
Look for bus number 1 at Pettah Central Bus Station for a straightforward and budget-friendly option. If you’re looking for a more comfortable ride, opt for an air-conditioned (AC) bus. These upgraded buses provide a cooler and more pleasant journey, especially on hotter days.
Rent a car or a tuk-tuk – the most fun experience
While renting a car offers comfort and convenience, I don’t think it’s the best option for travelling around Sri Lanka.
Now, renting a tuk-tuk? That’s an entirely different story. It’s one of the most exciting and adventurous ways to explore the country. Cruising through lush landscapes and bustling towns in your own tuk-tuk adds a whole new level of fun to the journey.

Where to stay in Kandy
When choosing where to stay in Kandy, it’s essential to consider how you plan to get around.
If you don’t have your own transport, staying near the city centre is your best option. This allows you to walk to most of the main attractions, like Kandy Lake and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, as well as nearby restaurants and shops.
During my visit, I stayed at Sevana Hotel, and it was an excellent choice. The hotel is centrally located, so I could easily explore the city on foot. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Plus, breakfast at the hotel was quite good as well.
I had another lovely night at Kan̆du when I returned to Kandy during my Sri Lanka trip. It’s a cosy homestay with a warm and welcoming owner. The room was comfortable, and the traditional breakfast was absolutely delicious.
Kandy also offers accommodations in the surrounding hills, which often come with stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. While these places are perfect for relaxing, they can be harder to access without a car or tuk-tuk, so keep that in mind when planning your stay.
Ultimately, your choice will depend on whether you prefer convenience or a more secluded retreat.

01 | Admire the incredible Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa) is one of the most significant Kandy attractions.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site houses a relic of Buddha’s tooth and draws pilgrims from across the world. The temple is beautifully adorned with intricate carvings.
Visiting during the Theva ceremony adds a special experience. You’ll witness offerings and traditional drumming. It’s a must when visiting Kandy.
The ceremonies take place three times a day: 5.30 am to 7 am, 9.30 to 11 am and 6.30 pm to 8 pm. While the temple will be more crowded during these times, the lively energy and devotion of the worshippers make it an integral part of the experience and a must when exploring Kandy.
Make sure to wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a sacred site. You’ll also need to remove your shoes before entering. They can be safely left at the designated counters outside the temple for a small fee.

02 | Have fun at the Royal Botanic Gardens
The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya are a must-see for nature lovers.
The gardens feature lush landscapes, an iconic palm-lined avenue, and one of the world’s largest collections of orchids. Highlights include the massive Javan fig tree and medicinal herb gardens, perfect for a tranquil escape.
I came across some reviews online saying it was overpriced for what you get, but honestly, I loved it. It ended up being one of my favourite spots in Kandy!
It’s an excellent spot for picnics, photography, or simply enjoying the beauty of Sri Lanka’s flora. The gardens are located about 6 kilometres from Kandy.
The easiest way to reach the Royal Botanic Gardens is by tuk-tuk. Alternatively, you can take buses 644, 653, or 666 from the main bus station in Kandy. The bus journey takes just 15–20 minutes and costs only a few rupees.

03 | Stroll around the Kandy Lake
Kandy Lake is a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city and one of the easiest things to do in Kandy. The shaded walking path surrounding the lake is perfect for a relaxing stroll, with plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the view.
The lake was built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe and holds historical significance. It’s also located close to other Kandy attractions, like the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, making it a convenient stop on your Kandy itinerary.
If you’d like, you can take a leisurely walk around Kandy Lake. The path is approximately 3 kilometres long and takes about an hour to complete.
04 | Get amazing city views from the Bahirawakanda Buddha Statue
The Bahirawakanda Buddha Statue sits atop a hill overlooking Kandy. And it’s worth the detour for its impressive views of Kandy and Kandy Lake.
Standing 27 meters tall, this massive white Buddha is visible from various points in the city.
Visitors can climb up to the base of the statue for panoramic views of Kandy and the surrounding hills. The serene setting makes it a great spot for photographs.

05 | Shop at Kandy Municipal Central Market
The Kandy Municipal Central Market is a bustling hub of activity and a great place to experience local life.
Here, you’ll find everything from fresh produce and fragrant spices to textiles, handicrafts, and souvenirs. The lively atmosphere makes it a fun spot to wander and soak in the vibrant energy of Kandy.
If you wish, you can take your time exploring the market’s two floors. The layout is easy to navigate, and the vendors are generally friendly. It’s a fantastic place to pick up affordable gifts or try some local fruits.

06 | Admire St. Pauls Church
St. Paul’s Church is a historic Anglican church located near the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Built in 1848 during British colonial rule, the church features neo-Gothic architecture and beautiful stained-glass windows.
Inside, you’ll find wooden pews and a simple yet elegant altar. It’s less touristy than most Kandy attractions but it’s worth a short visit.
07 | Learn more at the Ceylon Tea Museum
If you love tea, then a visit to the Ceylon Tea Museum is a must. Sri Lanka is world-renowned for its tea production, and this museum offers a deep dive into the country’s rich tea heritage.
Located in a beautifully restored tea factory in Hantana, just 4 kilometres from Kandy, it’s a fantastic spot to add to your Kandy itinerary.
The museum showcases a fascinating collection of vintage tea-making equipment, historical photographs, and documents that trace the evolution of the industry. You’ll also learn about the life and contributions of James Taylor, the pioneer of Ceylon tea.

08 | Take a day trip to Dambulla Cave Temple
The Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And it’s one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic cultural landmarks.
Located within a massive rock, the temple features five caves adorned with intricate murals and over 150 statues of Buddha, gods, and kings.
The murals depict scenes from Buddha’s life and the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Statues range from over 2000 years old to those added during the Kandyan era. The serene atmosphere inside the caves contrasts beautifully with the sweeping views from the temple’s entrance.
Even though the temple isn’t located in Kandy, its relatively short distance makes it a worthwhile addition to your itinerary. At just 72 kilometres from Kandy (2h drive), it can be easily visited as part of a day trip.

09 | Take a day trip to Lion Rock
Another of the best day trips from Kandy is Lion Rock in Sigiriya. This is actually considered by many as the 8th wonder of the World.
This iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site is famed for its stunning views, ancient frescoes, and fascinating history. The massive rock fortress rises 200 metres above the surrounding jungle, offering a challenging climb that’s well worth the effort.
As you ascend, you’ll pass through the remnants of a royal palace complex. It includes landscaped gardens, water features, and terraced levels. At the summit, you’ll find the ruins of the ancient palace and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The views are absolutely breathtaking!
Although the complex is vast, you can explore most of it in just half a day (3 to 4 hours). This makes it ideal to pair with a visit to the Dambulla Cave Temple, which is conveniently located just 30 minutes away.

10 | Visit other temples in Kandy
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the most famous in Kandy. However, there are other temples in the area well worth adding to your things to do in Kandy.
The Three Temple Loop is a fascinating circuit located in the scenic countryside of Gampola, just outside of Kandy. This route takes you to Gadaladeniya Viharaya, Embekke Devalaya, and Lankathilaka Vihara. These are all 14th-century temples rich in history and craftsmanship.
Many popular Kandy tours include the Three Temple Loop as part of their itinerary. For example, this highly-rated tour combines a visit to these temples with other must-see Kandy attractions. This includes the Royal Botanic Garden, Sacred Tooth Relic Temple, and Big Buddha Statue, offering a comprehensive cultural and scenic experience.
11 | Ride the epic train from Kandy to Ella
The Kandy to Ella train ride is often hailed as one of the most stunning train journeys in the world. This 6–7 hour adventure takes you through breathtaking tea plantations, misty mountains, and picturesque villages.
While it’s not strictly a thing to do in Kandy, the journey begins here, making it a fantastic option to continue your Sri Lankan travels in the most scenic way possible. I know it was one of my favourite things to do in Sri Lanka.
To get the best out of this epic train ride, book your tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons. First-class offers air-conditioned comfort. Second-class provides an authentic experience with open windows for stunning views.
It’s also possible to shorten the journey and stop about halfway at Nuwara Eliya, a picturesque town known for its cool climate and lush tea plantations. This makes it an ideal spot to explore the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country before continuing to Ella. For instance, I skipped the train ride from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and only did the part from Nuwara Eliya to Ella.
12 | Attend a Kandyan Cultural Show
A Kandyan cultural show is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in Sri Lanka’s rich traditions. These lively performances feature vibrant costumes, rhythmic drumming, and energetic dances that tell stories of the island’s cultural heritage.
Shows are conveniently held at venues near Kandy Lake, making it easy to include in your evening plans.

13 | Go on a day trip to Ambuluwawa Tower
Another accessible and fun option from Kandy is the Ambuluwawa Tower, just an hour’s drive away.
This striking tower features a spiral staircase that wraps around its exterior. Plus, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of surrounding hills, lush forests, and distant mountains.
The climb is both thrilling and nerve-wracking, with narrow paths and dizzying heights adding an element of adventure.
Although I didn’t get the chance to visit it myself due to lack of time, I decided to include it in this list because it looks so cool!

14 | Get closer to nature at Udawattakele Sanctuary
Another must-add to your Kandy itinerary is the Udawattakele Forest Reserve, an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Known as the “garden above the royal palace,” this historic forest once served as a royal sanctuary. It is now a refuge for diverse wildlife and lush plant life.
The reserve features walking trails that wind through dense greenery, towering trees, and serene viewpoints offering stunning views of Kandy.
As you explore, keep an eye out for birds, monkeys, and other wildlife that make this tranquil haven their home.
15 | Get for a hike at Hanthana Mountain
Although not as well-known as other spots on this list, the Hanthana Mountain Range offers a peaceful escape from Kandy’s chaotic mayhem. Best of all, it’s just a 30-minute journey from the city centre.
There, you can take a hiking trail that rewards you with breathtaking views of Kandy, Peradeniya, and the surrounding hills.
You can choose between a shorter 4 km route or a longer 7 km trek. Both options are moderately challenging and require a good level of fitness.
I haven’t had the chance to do this hike myself (unfortunately!), but here are all the tips and insights from someone who has experienced it firsthand.
16 | Admire Kandy Lake from Kandy Viewpoint
Who doesn’t love a good viewpoint? The Kandy Viewpoint is located on a hill just a short distance from the city centre. It offers stunning panoramic views of Kandy, including the serene lake and surrounding hills.
It’s a quick and easy spot to visit, making it perfect for a break from exploring the bustling streets below. Here is the exact location of this viewpoint.
Must-try restaurants in Kandy
Kandy offers a variety of dining options, from cosy cafés to vibrant street food spots. Here are some must-try restaurants to add to your list:
- Street Hub by Mystery Meat: Even though we were the only ones when we visited, the food was delicious and packed with flavour, without being too spicy.
- Buono: Known for its excellent coffee and more trendy dishes, this café is perfect for a relaxed break during your explorations. Super cute and quite tasty!
- Cafe Nuwara: A charming and super cute spot with a vast menu featuring many Sri Lankan and international dishes.
- Roobinz Cafe and Restaurant: A budget-friendly option serving hearty Sri Lankan meals.

Add an extra day if you want to explore nearby tea plantations or take a day trip to Sigiriya. This gives you a balanced mix of sightseeing and relaxation.
What is the best time to visit Kandy?
The best time to visit Kandy is from December to March, during the dry season. This period offers sunny days ideal for exploring the city’s attractions. However, it’s possible to visit during other months, even though rain is more likely.
The rainiest months are April, October, and November. That said, I visited in early September, and despite some clouds, it didn’t rain much. With Kandy’s hot weather year-round, any time can be a great time to visit if you plan well!
For a unique experience, consider visiting in July or August to witness the grand Esala Perahera festival.
Alternatively, travelling in mid-April offers the chance to celebrate the Sinhalese New Year (Aluth Avurudu). While this is a fantastic time to immerse yourself in local culture and traditions, it’s also one of the busiest periods to visit the city, with larger crowds.
What is the best way to get around Kandy?
Walking is the best way to get around Kandy, especially in the city centre. Most places to visit in Kandy, such as Kandy Lake, the Temple of the Tooth, and the local markets, are located close to each other.
For attractions that are farther away, like the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue or the Royal Botanic Gardens, hiring a tuk-tuk is a convenient option. Tuk-tuks are affordable and readily available, making them ideal for covering greater distances while still enjoying the city’s sights. Use the Pick Me app to find a tuk-tuk easily and without being scammed.
Is Kandy safe for tourists?
Yes, Kandy is generally safe for tourists. The city has a welcoming atmosphere, and most areas are traveller-friendly.
As with any destination, keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded places. Stick to reputable transport options and enjoy exploring one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful cities with peace of mind.
What is the currency in Sri Lanka?
The currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). As of January 2025, 1 LKR = 0,0033€.
To make purchases with a currency other than the one I usually use (Euro), I always use the Revolut card, which has many advantages.
One of the biggest advantages of the Revolut card while travelling is the fact it does not charge extra fees for using a different currency. I recommend making a Revolut Card for your next trip.
Can I use a card to pay in Sri Lanka?
It’s best to carry cash for small purchases, especially in local markets or rural areas, as card payments may not always be accepted.
ATMs are widely available in Colombo and major cities, and international cards are usually supported. I used my Revolut Card and it worked perfectly.
Where to withdraw money without paying fees in Sri Lanka?
To minimise fees when withdrawing money in Sri Lanka, consider using ATMs from Bank of Ceylon. They are widely available across the country and often have lower transaction fees for international cards.
If you use a Revolut Card, you won’t be charged any fees at all.
What documents do you need to visit Sri Lanka?
To visit Sri Lanka, you’ll need a valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining. Most travellers are also required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival, which serves as a visa.
The ETA can be applied for online and is usually processed within a few days. When I visited, it was 45€. You can also apply for a visa once you arrive in Sri Lanka. I know some people who did it.
Always check the latest visa requirements for your country before travelling to Sri Lanka.
How to have internet in Sri Lanka?
Staying connected in Sri Lanka is easy, and using an eSIM is one of the best options. eSIMs allow you to activate mobile data on your phone without needing a physical SIM card. Airalo is a popular choice, offering plans starting at just 5€ for 1GB of data.
Alternatively, you can purchase a physical SIM from providers like Dialog or Mobitel at the airport or in the city. Both options ensure you have reliable internet access throughout your trip.
