While this tiny country often flies under the radar, it’s packed with stunning castles, charming villages, and breathtaking landscapes waiting to be explored.
After exploring Luxembourg for a few days, I decided to curate this list to help you choose which places to visit.

Most beautiful places in Luxembourg you can’t miss
1. Luxembourg City
Alright, let’s get the obvious one out of the way—Luxembourg City had to be on this list. It’s the capital, after all, and probably one of the main reasons you’re even thinking about visiting Luxembourg in the first place.
Start by exploring the Old Quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its medieval streets and historic fortifications. Don’t miss Casemates du Bock, an underground tunnel system that once protected the city from invaders. It was one of my favorite things to do in the city!
For the best views, walk along the Chemin de la Corniche, often called “Europe’s most beautiful balcony.”

2. Vianden
Vianden is one of the most beautiful towns in Luxembourg, straight out of a fairy tale. The star of the show?Vianden Castle – one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval fortresses with breathtaking views over the Our Valley.
If you’re up for a scenic adventure, take the Vianden Chairlift to a panoramic viewpoint over the castle, then wander back through the old town’s cobbled streets.
Beyond the castle, Vianden is packed with history and culture. Literature lovers will enjoy the Victor Hugo House Museum, where the famous French writer lived during his exile.

3. Echternach
Out of all the beautiful places in Luxembourg I visited, Echternach was easily one of my favorites.
As the oldest city in Luxembourg, Echternach is packed with history, culture, and scenic landscapes. It sits right on the border with Germany, making it an easy day trip from Luxembourg City.
The town’s quiet streets, riverside views, and historical landmarks make it one of the best places to visit in Luxembourg.
The highlight here is the Abbey of Echternach, founded in 698 AD by Saint Willibrord. It played a major role in the country’s religious history and is still one of the most must-see places in Luxembourg.
Right next door, the Basilica of Saint Willibrord is home to the saint’s tomb and stunning stained-glass windows. If you visit in June, you might witness the Echternach Dancing Procession, one of Luxembourg’s most unique traditions.
For a nature escape, Echternach Lake is just a short walk from the center, offering walking trails, picnic areas, and water activities.

4. Clervaux
Nestled in the Ardennes, Clervaux is known for its storybook scenery and historical landmarks. The Clervaux Castle, dating back to the 12th century, houses the Family of Man, a world-famous photography exhibition.
Take a stroll through the charming town center, stopping by the Benedictine Abbey of St. Maurice. If you love history, the Battle of the Bulge Museum is also another must-visit.
5. Müllerthal Region
Also called Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland, the Müllerthal Region is a paradise for outdoor lovers.
The Müllerthal Trail takes you through dense forests, caves, and spectacular rocky formations. Plus, you’ll get to see the stunning Schiessentümpel Waterfall.
The best way to explore is by hiking one of the marked trails, ranging from short walks to multi-day treks. You’ll also find charming Luxembourg towns along the way, perfect for a quick break.
6. Wiltz
Wiltz is a hidden gem in northern Luxembourg, famous for its beautiful chateau and peaceful countryside. Visit Wiltz Castle, which now hosts a brewing museum and the Festival of Wiltz, one of the country’s biggest cultural events.
The town is surrounded by green hills, making it a great base for nature walks. If you’re a history buff, don’t miss the Battle of the Bulge Memorial, dedicated to WWII soldiers.
7. Remich
Located on the banks of the Moselle River, Remich is the heart of Luxembourg’s wine region. Take a wine-tasting tour at one of the many local wineries, where you can sample award-winning Crémant.
Stroll along the Moselle promenade, lined with restaurants serving fresh fish and regional wines. For a relaxing experience, take a river cruise and admire the vineyards from the water.
The best time to visit is in autumn when the vineyards turn golden and the wine festivals are in full swing!
8. Diekirch
Diekirch is a picturesque riverside town, known for its café culture and historic sites. The National Museum of Military History is a must-visit. It showcases WWII artifacts and personal stories from the Battle of the Bulge.
Wander through the old town square, stopping for a local beer at one of the many open-air terraces. Diekirch is also a great place to start cycling routes that take you through scenic Luxembourg towns.
If you visit in February, don’t miss the Donkey Festival, a quirky local celebration!
9. Esch-Sur-Sûre
Tucked into a bend of the Sûre River, Esch-Sur-Sûre is one of the most picturesque towns in Luxembourg. It’s best known for its dramatic hilltop castle ruins, which date back to the 10th century and offer breathtaking views over the valley.
Wandering through the town’s narrow, winding streets, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
The town itself is tiny but full of charm. The stone houses and medieval bridges add to its storybook feel, and the Church of St. John the Baptist is a peaceful stop along the way.
At night, the castle ruins are illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere that makes Esch-Sur-Sûre even more special.
10. Beaufort
Beaufort is best known for its medieval castle, which looks straight out of a fairy tale. The Beaufort Castles include both a medieval fortress and a Renaissance palace, both open for tours (high season only).
Make sure to also try the local Cassis Liqueur, a specialty made in Beaufort for centuries!
11. Larochette
Larochette is a small but stunning village, perfect for a quiet getaway. The Larochette Castle ruins offer breathtaking views over the Valley of the White Ernz.
Even if the castle is closed when you visit, make sure to walk up to it. There’s a stunning viewpoint nearby that offers a perfect bird’s-eye view of the entire town.
I know Portuguese people are all over Luxembourg, but in Larochette, it felt next level. As I wandered through the village, I could mostly hear Portuguese being spoken, which, as a Portuguese traveler, felt oddly amusing.
If you love hiking, Larochette is also a great starting point. Some of the best trails in Müllerthal pass right through the village, making it a perfect stop for nature lovers.
12. Bourscheid Castle
Perched on a hill, Bourscheid Castle is one of the most impressive fortresses in Luxembourg. Dating back to the 10th century, it offers unmatched views over the Sûre Valley.
Visit in the evening for a magical experience—the castle is beautifully illuminated at night. Nearby, you’ll find several hiking trails with panoramic views of the Luxembourg countryside.
13. Berdorf
If you love the outdoors, Berdorf is one of the best places to visit in Luxembourg.
It’s a hiker’s paradise, sitting right in the Müllerthal Region, surrounded by towering rocky formations and deep gorges. The Müllerthal Trail runs through Berdorf, offering breathtaking views and caves to explore.
One of the top spots is Hohllay Cave, a massive rock tunnel carved out by centuries of millstone extraction. The acoustics inside are so good that small concerts are sometimes held here!
Nearby, you’ll also find Schiessentümpel Waterfall, one of the must-see places in Luxembourg.
14. Ettelbrück
Ettelbrück may not be as famous as other Luxembourg towns, but it’s got an important role in history. This small city is home to the General Patton Memorial Museum, honoring the U.S. general who helped liberate Luxembourg during World War II. If you’re a history buff, it’s worth a stop.
Beyond its war history, Ettelbrück is a lively cultural hub, with local markets, live music events, and plenty of cozy cafés. The town sits at the gateway to the Ardennes, making it a great base for exploring northern Luxembourg’s scenic countryside.
15. Dudelange
Located in southern Luxembourg, Dudelange is one of the main cities in Luxembourg, known for its industrial heritage and creative scene. It was once a major steel town, but today it has transformed into a cultural hotspot with art spaces, music festivals, and trendy cafés.
One of the top places to visit is Mount St. John, where you’ll find the ruins of an old castle and panoramic views over the region. If you’re into modern art, stop by Konschthal, a contemporary art center housed in a former factory.
