Located in eastern Luxembourg, right on the border with Germany, Echternach is a small but historically rich town. It sits along the Sauer River, making it an easy day trip from Luxembourg City and even from German cities like Trier.
During my stay in Luxembourg City, I took several day trips to nearby towns—and Echternach was one of them.
The moment I arrived, I was struck by how quiet it was. Just a few people wandered the historic streets, making it feel like I had the town all to myself. I can only imagine how different it must be in the summer, with more visitors exploring its charming squares and landmarks.
So, what to do in Echternach? This town is packed with history, from its medieval streets to the famous Abbey of Echternach. It’s the perfect place for a relaxed day of sightseeing, learning about Luxembourg’s past, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.
In this guide, I’ll take you through the best things to do in Echternach, and practical tips for your visit, including where to stay.
How to get to Echternach
Echternach is an easy day trip from Luxembourg City, with several transport options available.
Getting from Luxembourg City to Echternach by Car
Driving is the fastest and most convenient way to visit Echternach.
The town is about 35 km (22 miles) from Luxembourg City, and the drive takes around 35–40 minutes.

Getting from Luxembourg City to Echternach by Bus
If you’re relying on public transport, buses 201 and 211 connect Luxembourg City to Echternach.
They start at Limpertsberg Theater and stop at multiple points in Echternach. The most convenient stop is Echternach Gare Centre 1, which is within walking distance of most attractions.
Both buses take between 50 minutes to 1 hour to reach Echternach.
Public transportation in Luxembourg is free, so no need to worry about tickets!
To check schedules and routes, use mobiliteit.lu or Google Maps. I personally found Google Maps the easiest way to plan my trip.

Here are the top things to do in Echternach. This includes must-visit landmarks and nearby attractions worth adding to your itinerary.
1. Abbey of Echternach & Museum
The Abbey of Echternach is the town’s most famous landmark, founded in the 7th century by Saint Willibrord.
It played a major role in Luxembourg’s religious and cultural history. And, today, it’s one of the most significant historical sites in the country.
The Museum of the Abbey houses medieval manuscripts and artifacts from the abbey’s past.
If you’re interested in history, religious heritage, or art, this is a must-visit. The museum showcases the famous Echternach scriptorium. This is where monks created some of the most detailed medieval manuscripts in Europe.
While most of the abbey is now part of a school and closed to visitors, its grand exterior is still worth admiring.
📝 USEFUL INFORMATION: If you want a deeper dive into its history, the Museum of the Abbey offers fascinating exhibits on its medieval past. The museum is open only during the summer months (July and August, 10 am–5 pm) and costs 3€ (free with the Luxembourg Pass).
2. Basilica of Saint Willibrord
Located right next to the abbey, the Basilica of Saint Willibrord is a stunning mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture.
It’s best known for housing the tomb of Saint Willibrord, which attracts pilgrims every year. The interior features intricate stained-glass windows and detailed stone carvings. It’s a fascinating place to explore.
The basilica is also home to the Echternach Dancing Procession, a UNESCO-recognized religious tradition. If you’re visiting in June, you’ll witness this incredible cultural event.
📝 USEFUL INFORMATION: The Basilica of Saint Willibrord is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm, but on Sundays, visits are only allowed after 1 pm. Entry is free.
3. Market Square & Denzelt
The Market Square is the heart of Echternach, surrounded by historic buildings, cafés, and small shops. It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee, people-watch, or take in the medieval charm of the town.
The highlight here is the Denzelt. This is a former courthouse from the 14th century with an intricate façade featuring statues of Luxembourg’s historical rulers.
The square is especially lively on Tuesdays when a weekly farmer’s market brings in fresh produce, cheese, and artisanal products.
4. Rococo Pavilion & Gardens
Tucked away in Echternach Park, the Rococo Pavilion is a small but beautiful structure built in the 18th century. It was once part of a grand formal garden, and today, it’s one of the most photogenic spots in town.
Surrounded by lush greenery and old trees, it’s a peaceful place for a short stroll. And on the other side of the river is Germany!
The park itself is great for relaxing and a quiet atmosphere away from the main tourist areas.
5. Roman Villa of Echternach
Located just 1.2 km from the town center, there is the Roman Villa of Echternach. It’s one of the most important Roman archaeological sites in Luxembourg, dating from the 1st century AD. This ancient estate gives visitors a glimpse into life during Roman times.
You can see the foundations of the villa, mosaic floors, and an on-site museum that explains the history of the estate’s wealthy inhabitants.
Unfortunately, the Roman Villa was closed when I visited, but from what I researched, it’s one of the best-preserved Roman sites in Luxembourg. If you love ancient history, this short walk from the center is well worth it!

Need a break from sightseeing? Just 1.5 km from the town center, Echternach Lake is the perfect place to slow down. The lake is surrounded by walking and biking trails, making it a great place to stretch your legs after some exploring.
In the summer, you can rent SUP boards, or pedal boats, or simply enjoy a lakeside picnic.
It’s located close to the Roman Villa, so you can combine a visit to these two places.
7. Cultural Walk: Via Epternacensis
Love exploring on foot? The Via Epternacensis is a great way to uncover Echternach’s history while enjoying a scenic walk.
Via Epternacensis is a self-guided historical walking route that takes you through Echternach’s most important landmarks. The trail includes stops at medieval buildings, churches, and historic sites. You’ll also find informative signs explaining the town’s history.
If you prefer to explore at your own pace, this is a great way to explore some of the best things to see in Echternach while learning about its past. The route is well-marked and easy to follow. It takes about 2 hours to complete.
8. Trip to Beaufort Castle or Larochette
If you have extra time, consider a short trip to Beaufort Castle or Larochette, two of the most beautiful castles near Echternach.
- Beaufort Castle is 17 km away and features a medieval ruin and a Renaissance-style mansion. It’s a great place for history lovers and offers scenic views over the countryside.
- Larochette Castle is 19 km away, sitting on a rocky hill with panoramic views over the village. It’s smaller than Beaufort but equally stunning.
Both castles are easily accessible by car or bus and make for a great half-day trip from Echternach.
Quick tip: Both castles are closed during the low season, but you can still admire their impressive exteriors from the outside.
Best time to visit Echternach
Echternach is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit is during spring and summer. This is when the town feels more alive. Locals and tourists fill the streets, outdoor cafés open for business, and all major attractions operate at full hours.
If you’re visiting in June, you might even catch the Echternach Dancing Procession, a unique UNESCO-listed tradition that takes place every Whit Tuesday.
Autumn also brings stunning fall colors, especially around Echternach Lake, while winter tends to be much quieter.
How many days to spend in Echternach
One day is more than enough to see the main attractions, explore the historic center, and enjoy a relaxing walk by the lake.
Most people visit Echternach as a day trip from Luxembourg City, and it’s easy to fit everything into a single day.
However, if you love hiking and nature, consider extending your stay to explore the Mullerthal region, often called Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland.
The area is known for stunning rock formations, lush forests, and scenic trails. I was gutted not to have visited because some of the hikes looked incredible, especially the one to Schiessentümpel Waterfall.
If I had the chance to go back, I’d definitely visit in spring or summer to experience the region in its full glory.
Where to stay in Echternach
Most people visit Echternach as a day trip. But you can also stay overnight, especially if you want to absorb the town’s peaceful atmosphere or explore nearby attractions at a slower pace.
There are a few hotels and guesthouses in town, ranging from cozy B&Bs to more traditional stays. Staying in Echternach also makes visiting places like Beaufort Castle, Larochette, and the Mullerthal trails easier without rushing back to Luxembourg City.
If you prefer a livelier base with more dining and nightlife options, Luxembourg City is still the best option. But if you’re looking for a quiet, charming stay, Echternach is a great choice.
Hotel Le Postillon offers simple yet comfortable rooms in a central location. For a more relaxing stay surrounded by nature, Hotel Bel-Air is also a fantastic choice. This well-rated 4-star hotel offers a spa, an on-site restaurant, and easy access to hiking trails in the Mullerthal region.
