How to get to Ella

Getting to Ella offers several travel options to suit different budgets and preferences. Whether you choose the world-famous train journey or a more direct route like a private car, there’s a way for everyone to reach this hill town.

Option 1 – Getting to Ella by Train

From Colombo

Although there is a direct train from Colombo Fort to Ella, I wouldn’t recommend undertaking such a long journey in one go. Instead, consider breaking it up with stops at other amazing destinations in Sri Lanka. Consider visiting Kandy or Nuwara Eliya to fully enjoy the experience.

From Kandy

The train ride from Kandy to Ella is often called one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world—and for good reason. As the train snakes through misty mountains and tea plantations, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of lush valleys and cascading waterfalls.

However, the full trip from Kandy to Ella takes around 6–7 hours, which can feel quite long. Instead, you can start halfway at Nuwara Eliya (Nanu Oya station), which is what I did on my visit. The section from Nuwara Eliya to Ella is often said to be the most scenic part of the journey.

An aerial view of the Nine Arches Bridge in Ella, Sri Lanka, surrounded by dense greenery and vibrant yellow blossoms
Nine Arch Bridge

This option not only saves time, but allows you to focus on the most beautiful stretch of the trip. Whether you’re leaning out of the doors for the perfect photo or simply taking in the views from your seat, this ride is unforgettable. I absolutely loved it!

Tickets are available in the first, second, and third classes. The second class offers an authentic experience and open windows for better views. Be sure to book early, as this train is popular with both locals and travellers.

Option 2 – Getting to Ella by Bus

Buses are also an affordable option to reach Ella. You have options both from Kandy or Colombo. It’s still a great and authentic experience, but less scenic than the train.

Sri Lankan buses can be an experience in themselves—fast, busy, and lively! Be prepared for a bumpy yet memorable ride.

A winding road cutting through lush green hills in Ella, Sri Lanka, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape
Roads in Ella

Honestly, while this is a possible and practical option, I’d highly recommend choosing the train instead. It’s an unforgettable experience and one of those things you’d regret missing out on later.

Option 3 – Hiring a car or a tuk-tuk

If you prefer flexibility, hiring a tuk-tuk or a private car is a good option to reach Ella, though each comes with its pros and cons.

Renting a tuk-tuk is a more adventurous and immersive choice. It gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace while soaking in the stunning surroundings. It’s also a fun way to explore Sri Lanka’s roads and villages. If you’re considering this option, make sure to check out my guide to renting a tuk-tuk in Sri Lanka (plus a secret discount!) for all the tips you need to get started.

A private car, on the other hand, offers more comfort and is quicker. However, it can be more expensive and doesn’t provide the same level of connection to the local experience as a tuk-tuk. While it’s a practical option, I’d recommend the tuk-tuk for a more memorable journey.

💡EXTRA TIP: You don’t have to choose between the train ride and renting a tuk-tuk—you can do both! When I rented a tuk-tuk with TukTukRental.com, they drove it to Ella for me while I enjoyed the scenic train ride from Nuwara Eliya. It’s the perfect way to experience the iconic journey and still have the freedom of a tuk-tuk waiting for you in Ella.

Best hotels in Ella

Ella offers a variety of accommodation options to suit every traveller, from budget-friendly hostels or homestays to luxurious stays.

If you plan to dive into Ella’s active restaurant and café scene, staying in the town centre is ideal for easy access to all the buzz.

However, if you’d rather wake up to the sounds of nature and enjoy a more tranquil experience, consider staying in accommodations further out. There are many boutique lodges nestled in the hills. These are some of the best places to stay in Ella if you’re looking for a tranquil retreat:

During my stay in Ella, I chose The Blue View Inn, and it was a fantastic experience.

The central location made it easy to explore attractions like the Nine Arch Bridge and Ella Rock. The rooms were cosy, and the views from the balcony were a lovely bonus. Plus, they served a delicious breakfast each morning, which was the perfect start to a day of exploring.

If you’re looking to stay in the heart of Ella, here are my top recommendations:

💼 TRAVEL INSURANCE: Unexpected events happen anywhere in the world, so I always recommend getting travel insurance. I regularly use Heymondo, which offers some of the highest coverages on the market at very competitive prices. As well as covering medical expenses, Heymondo’s insurance also covers the loss or theft of luggage, electronic equipment and more. They also have a 24/7 customer service through their App. As A Ticket to Take Off reader, you get a 5% discount when purchasing Heymondo insurance. The purchase must be made using this link, and the price shown on the website already includes the discount.

Best things to do in Ella

Ella is a peaceful hill town surrounded by lush green landscapes, making it one of the most beautiful places to visit in Sri Lanka.

Whether you’re an adventure seeker, nature lover, or someone who simply wants to unwind, Ella has something for everyone.

Here’s a complete guide to the top attractions and places to see in Ella to help you plan your perfect trip.

01 | Ride the famous Kandy to Ella Train

The train journey from Kandy to Ella is considered one of the most scenic in the world. It’s definitely a bucket-list experience for anyone visiting Sri Lanka. The route takes you through lush tea plantations, misty mountains, and charming villages, making it one of the best things to do in Ella before you even arrive.

💡 EXTRA TIP: One of the highlights of this train journey is the breathtaking scenery along the way. From Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, the most stunning views can be enjoyed from the right side of the train. Beyond Nuwara Eliya, be sure to switch to the left side for the best vistas as the landscape becomes even more dramatic.

You’ve probably seen photos of this ride on Instagram, and it’s one of those rare experiences that’s even better in real life. Leaning out of the open train doors is a cool and refreshing way to take in the views (I LOVED it!). But please stay safe! Most of the time, the train goes slowly but make sure to always hold on firmly and be mindful of passing trees and poles.

Seats in second or even third class are ideal for a more authentic experience. These classes often have open windows and doors, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the stunning scenery and feel the breeze as you travel through the mountains.

Keep in mind that this journey is extremely popular, especially during high season, so it’s best to book tickets online in advance to secure your spot. However, not all tickets are available online, and you can always try your luck on the day of travel. I purchased third-class tickets (0,5€) on the day of the trip, for example. But please keep in mind I visited during the low season.

If the full journey feels too long or you’re short on time, you can start at Nuwara Eliya. This is what I did and I think it was a wise choice to maximize my time in Sri Lanka.

02 | Hike Little Adam’s Peak

Little Adam’s Peak is one of the easiest and most rewarding hikes in the area. It’s a staple in any Ella itinerary. The trail is well-marked and accessible for pretty much all fitness levels. The trail winds through lush tea plantations and offers panoramic views of Ella Rock and Ella Gap.

Although the hike to Little Adam’s Peak is relatively short, it’s a steady uphill climb, so be ready to work up a bit of a sweat. It took me about 15–20 minutes to reach the top, but the effort was well worth it.

While it’s possible to hike from Ella, I wouldn’t recommend it as it doesn’t add much to the experience. Instead, begin your hike near the Ravana Zipline for a more convenient starting point.

Given Sri Lanka’s hot and humid weather, I recommend starting your hike early in the morning or late in the afternoon when it’s cooler and more comfortable. The softer light during these times also makes the views even more stunning.

The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views, including Ella Rock and the Ella Gap, making it one of the most scenic places to see in Ella.

03 | Flying Ravana Adventure Park

For thrill-seekers, the Flying Ravana Zip Lining experience is one of the most exciting things to do in Ella. This adventure takes you soaring above lush tea plantations and rolling hills. Plus, it offers incredible aerial views of the Ella Gap.

The zip line is 550 metres long, making it one of the longest in Sri Lanka, and reaches speeds of up to 80 km/h—perfect for adrenaline junkies!

For those who prefer to stay on solid ground, Flying Ravana also offers other activities. This includes ATV rides, an archery range, and a relaxing café where you can enjoy the views while cheering on friends and family. Find out more about prices and the activities available at Flying Ravana.

This site is conveniently located right next to Little Adam’s Peak, making it easy to combine both activities in a single visit.

04 | Visit the Nine Arch Bridge

No list of the best things to do in Ella would be complete without the Nine Arch Bridge. Surrounded by dense greenery and misty hills, this iconic structure is a must-see.

I loved it so much I visited twice—once in the early morning and again at sunset! It was much less crowded in the early morning (7 am – 8 am).

For the best photos, time your visit to catch a train crossing the bridge. It adds up to the experience! However, I’ve come across several train schedules online and even on-site, but they often seem to be inaccurate. To increase your chances of catching the train passing over the bridge, it’s best to ask a local once you’re in Ella. They’ll have the most up-to-date information.

There are several ways to reach the famous Nine Arch Bridge. When I visited, I tried two different routes—both were quite convenient.

A hiker walking along a scenic forest trail surrounded by tall trees and dense greenery, leading to the famous Nine Arches Bridge in Ella, Sri Lanka
Trail to get to Nine Arch Bridge

The first option is a pleasant trail through the vegetation near Café Umbrella (there are signs indicating the path). This scenic path takes about 15–20 minutes to reach the bridge, making it a great choice if you enjoy walking amidst nature.

SEE ALSO  Perfect day trip to Malacca (Malaysia): 1 Day Itinerary (+ free map)

The second, more convenient option is hiring a tuk-tuk and asking the driver to drop you off near the bridge. This route brings you to a different side of the bridge and is ideal if you prefer a quicker journey. If you’re driving your tuk-tuk, you can park nearby (for a small fee) and walk around 10 minutes to reach the bridge.

Just be aware that this route involves passing through a tunnel where the train runs. Personally, I didn’t find walking through the tunnel very enjoyable, so keep that in mind if you’re considering this option.

Regardless of the path you choose, the bridge is absolutely worth the effort!

If you’re looking for a spot to relax and enjoy excellent views of the Nine Arch Bridge, there are several cafés nearby with upper-level seating that offer stunning vantage points. Popular choices include Asanka Cafe or Café Soul Ella.

05 | Experience the Calypso Train

The Calypso Train is a unique and lively addition to Sri Lanka’s famous train journeys. It’s a tourist train that offers a truly one-of-a-kind experience for travellers.

Unlike the standard trains, the Calypso Train features live music performed by local bands on board, creating a festive atmosphere as you glide through Sri Lanka’s stunning hill country.

One major advantage of this train is that it stops on top of the Nine Arch Bridge. Find more info about the Calypso Train.

The carriages are similar to second class on regular trains. So, you’ll still have open windows and doors to soak in the incredible views of tea plantations, lush valleys, and towering viaducts.

06 | Admire the Ravana Falls

Just a short drive from Ella, Ravana Falls is a stunning 25-metre-tall waterfall and one of the easiest places to see in Ella. It’s particularly impressive during the rainy season when the water flow is at its peak.

You can enjoy a refreshing dip in the pools below or simply relax and take in the view. Access is rather simple since the waterfalls are visible from the road.

While it’s possible to access the upper levels of the waterfall, it can be quite dangerous, particularly during the rainy season when the rocks become slippery and the currents stronger.

07 | Explore Ella Rock

Another destination you’ll find in most Ella travel guides is the iconic Ella Rock. Known for its longer and more challenging hike, Ella Rock rewards adventurous travellers with breathtaking panoramic views from its summit.

The trail takes you through misty tea plantations, shaded forest paths, and rocky terrain, making it a diverse and scenic trek.

Unlike the relatively easy climb to Little Adam’s Peak, the hike to Ella Rock is steeper and can take around 3–4 hours round trip, depending on your pace. Here’s a helpful guide on how to climb the Ella Rock by yourself.

A stunning panoramic view from Little Adam's Peak in Ella, Sri Lanka, showcasing its lush greenery, rugged cliffs, and winding paths under a bright blue sky
Ella Rock seen from Little Adam’s Peak

If you want to make the most of the experience without worrying about navigation, consider joining a guided sunrise hike to Ella Rock. This is particularly helpful, as much of the trail is poorly marked and can be challenging to navigate on your own.

It’s best to start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and to catch the stunning morning light over the valley. The effort is well worth it, as the summit offers sweeping views of lush green landscapes, dotted with the peaks and ridges that define Ella.

Bring plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, and prepare for a bit of a workout, but rest assured, this hike is one of the most rewarding things to do in Ella.

08 | Stroll around Ella’s town

Although there isn’t much to visit in Ella’s town itself, it’s well worth taking some time to stroll around and soak in its laid-back vibe. The town centre is dotted with trendy cafés, cosy restaurants, and cute shops selling souvenirs.

While Ella’s lush green landscapes steal the spotlight, the town provides a lovely setting to unwind. It’s the perfect place to relax at the end of a busy day exploring and enjoying the warm, friendly atmosphere. I especially recommend Rainbow Café and Cafe Chill.

💡 EXTRA TIP: On Wednesdays, don’t miss the Ella Market, where you can browse fresh produce, spices, and local goods.

09 | Explore Ella’s Tea Plantations

No visit to Ella is complete without exploring its picturesque tea plantations. While Sri Lanka is home to many renowned tea estates, Ella provides a wonderful opportunity to experience the region’s tea-growing charm, especially if you’re skipping the plantations in Nuwara Eliya.

Powered by GetYourGuide

Some of the best tea plantations in Ella include the Halpewatte Tea Factory and Kinellan Tea Factory. At these locations, you can see the production process up close, learn about Sri Lanka’s tea-making heritage, and sample freshly brewed Ceylon tea.

Many tours combine a visit to the tea plantations with short walks through the fields, offering you a chance to see the tea-picking process up close. It’s a relaxing and educational way to connect with one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic industries.

10 | Visit Lipton’s Seat

Another popular option to witness the tea plantations near Ella is Lipton’s Seat in Haputale – one of the most famous viewpoints in Sri Lanka.

Named after Sir Thomas Lipton, the tea magnate who revolutionised the tea trade, this spot offers breathtaking views of rolling tea fields that stretch as far as the eye can see.

The best time to visit is early in the morning, as the skies are clearest and the sunrise adds a magical touch to the scenery.

🎫 For a hassle-free experience, consider joining Lipton’s Seat and Tea Factory Tour, which includes a visit to the stunning viewpoint and an insightful tour of a tea plantation.

11 | Take a Day Trip to Diyaluma Falls

Even though technically not located in Ella, I’ve decided to include this spot since it makes a fantastic day trip from Ella.

Diyaluma Falls is Sri Lanka’s second-tallest waterfall. Plus, it is an unforgettable destination just an hour’s drive away. Cascading from a height of 220 metres, the falls offer stunning views.

A close-up view of the base of Diyaluma Falls in Ella, Sri Lanka, where the water gracefully flows over rocks into a serene pool, framed by dense forest

What sets Diyaluma Falls apart are the natural pools at the top. They are perfect for a refreshing swim while enjoying sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.

To reach the pools, you’ll need to hike for about 30–45 minutes from the base. Once at the top, you can relax in the pools, soak up the scenery, and even sit by the edge to marvel at the waterfall cascading below.

A breathtaking view of Diyaluma Falls, Sri Lanka's second-highest waterfall, cascading down a rocky cliff surrounded by lush greenery

Even if you don’t plan to hike to the top of the waterfall, the sight of the 200-metre-tall waterfall from the base is absolutely stunning and well worth a visit.

For a hassle-free experience, consider joining a guided tour to Diyaluma Falls with lunch included, which takes care of transportation and ensures you make the most of your trip.

12 | Visit Sri Lanka’s tallest waterfall

Located about a 1.5-hour drive from Ella, Bambarakanda Falls is Sri Lanka’s tallest waterfall, standing at an impressive 241 metres. This breathtaking natural wonder is at its most spectacular during the wet season (April to September). This is when the cascading water flows in full force, creating a mesmerising sight.

While you can catch a glimpse of the falls from the road, the best experience comes from taking a 15-minute walk to the base, where you can appreciate its grandeur.

13 | Take a day trip to Udawalawe National Park

Even though Udawalawe National Park isn’t located in Ella, it’s worth mentioning as it can easily be done as a day trip from the town.

Doing a safari in Sri Lanka is an unforgettable experience. While there are many incredible parks like Yala, Kaudulla, and Minneriya, Udawalawe is also a fantastic choice.

Located about 2.5 hours from Ella, Udawalawe is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see elephants in their natural habitat. The park is also home to water buffalo, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species.

A guided safari is the best way to explore, offering you the chance to get up close to the wildlife and learn about the park’s ecosystem.

🎫 For a seamless experience, consider booking a Udawalawe safari directly from Ella.

Must-try restaurants in Ella

Ella’s dining scene is vibrant, offering a mix of local and international flavours that cater to all tastes. I tried some restaurants and really enjoyed all of them:

  • Rainbow Café (€): Known for its fresh and colourful dishes, it offers a cosy atmosphere and a menu featuring everything from smoothie bowls to more traditional Sri Lankan dishes.
  • The White Rabbit (€): combines a trendy vibe with a diverse menu of international and fusion cuisine. I really enjoyed the shrimp curry.
  • Cafe Chill (€): A local favourite, Café Chill is the go-to spot for a laid-back meal, offering a wide variety of dishes, from Sri Lankan rice and curry to Western classics. The juices were quite tasty and refreshing. At night, it becomes a popular bar.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ella

What is the best time of the year to visit Ella?

The best time to visit Ella is from December to March, during Sri Lanka’s dry season. These months are ideal for hiking and outdoor activities, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures.

From April to November, Ella sees more rain, but showers are usually brief, leaving plenty of time to explore. The rainy season enhances the lush greenery, making it a treat for nature lovers. Don’t let the weather forecasts deter you from visiting Ella. I went in early September, and the weather turned out to be fantastic!

For the best experience, plan your visit in the dry season when trails are safer and views are clearer.

How many days to spend in Ella?

Spending 2 to 3 days in Ella is ideal for exploring its top attractions, like Little Adam’s Peak, the Nine Arch Bridge, and Ella Rock.

I was there for just 1.5 days, but I wished I had stayed longer. Ella’s chill vibe, beautiful surroundings, and relaxed café scene make it a place where you’ll want to slow down and soak it all in.

How to get around Ella?

The best way to get around Ella is by tuk-tuk, as most attractions are not located close to the town centre.

While places like Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge are within walking distance, the journey can be tiring and time-consuming.

Instead, hire a tuk-tuk or drive your own to make getting there quicker and more convenient.

Is Ella worth visiting?

Yes, Ella is absolutely worth visiting!

Known for its stunning landscapes, iconic train journey, and serene vibe, it’s a must-see in Sri Lanka. Whether you enjoy hiking, relaxing in nature, or discovering local culture, Ella offers something for everyone.

Is Ella safe for solo travellers?

Ella is generally very safe for solo travellers. The town is welcoming and popular among backpackers, making it easy to meet other travellers. Even though I didn’t travel solo, I felt always safe during my time in Ella.

Just follow standard safety precautions, like avoiding poorly lit areas at night, and you’ll have a worry-free trip.

What is the currency in Sri Lanka?

The currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). As of January 2025, 1 LKR = 0,0033€.

To make purchases with a currency other than the one I usually use (Euro), I always use the Revolut card, which has many advantages.

One of the biggest advantages of the Revolut card while travelling is the fact it does not charge extra fees for using a different currency. I recommend making a Revolut Card for your next trip.

Can I use a card to pay in Sri Lanka?

It’s best to carry cash for small purchases, especially in local markets or rural areas, as card payments may not always be accepted.

ATMs are widely available in Colombo and major cities, and international cards are usually supported. I used my Revolut Card and it worked perfectly.

Where to withdraw money without paying fees in Sri Lanka?

To minimise fees when withdrawing money in Sri Lanka, consider using ATMs from Bank of Ceylon. They are widely available across the country and often have lower transaction fees for international cards.

If you use a Revolut Card, you won’t be charged any fees at all.

What documents do you need to visit Sri Lanka?

To visit Sri Lanka, you’ll need a valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining. Most travellers are also required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival, which serves as a visa.

The ETA can be applied for online and is usually processed within a few days. When I visited, it was 45€. You can also apply for a visa once you arrive in Sri Lanka. I know some people who did it.

Always check the latest visa requirements for your country before travelling to Sri Lanka.

How to have internet in Sri Lanka?

Staying connected in Sri Lanka is easy, and using an eSIM is one of the best options. eSIMs allow you to activate mobile data on your phone without needing a physical SIM card. Airalo is a popular choice, offering plans starting at just 5€ for 1GB of data.

Alternatively, you can purchase a physical SIM from providers like Dialog or Mobitel at the airport or in the city. Both options ensure you have reliable internet access throughout your trip.

Ella is a destination that perfectly blends natural beauty, adventure, and relaxation. From breathtaking hikes and iconic landmarks to cosy cafés and serene waterfalls, there are countless things to do in Ella that cater to every type of traveller.
