From Aveiro, the drive takes around 40 minutes, while from Porto it takes approximately 1 hour. This makes Sever do Vouga an easy day trip from Porto or Aveiro.

To be fully transparent, I personally haven’t stayed overnight in Sever do Vouga since I live in Porto and it is only around a 1-hour drive away, making it very easy to visit as a day trip.

However, if you prefer a slower pace of travel or want to spend more time exploring the surrounding nature, staying overnight can definitely be a great option.

Here are some of my favorite options in Sever do Vouga:

Without a doubt, Cabreia Waterfall is one of the main reasons to visit Sever do Vouga and easily one of the best things to do in Sever do Vouga.

With a height of around 25 meters (82 ft), it is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Portugal. The best part? Access is very easy, making it a great stop even if you are not particularly into hiking.

During warmer months, this is the perfect place to cool off. And when I say cool off, I really mean it because the water is freezing!

In the summer season, the waterfall is quite crowded, so you should consider that when you are planning your visit.

The waterfall is also part of Cabreia Leisure Park, which means you will find picnic areas and restroom facilities nearby, making it a comfortable stop if you are spending a few hours here.

Built in the early 20th century, Poço de Santiago Bridge stretches over the Vouga River and is considered one of the highest stone bridges in Portugal.

Even if you only stop briefly, I think it is worth visiting for the scenery alone. The combination of the bridge, river, and surrounding greenery makes this one of the prettiest spots in the area and definitely a great place for photos.

If you are visiting during warmer months, another one of the top things to do in Sever do Vouga is spending some time at Quinta do Barco River Beach.

The water is usually calm, making it a pleasant place to relax, cool off, or even try some water activities.

But honestly, what I liked most here was the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful natural setting. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend a couple of relaxing hours without feeling rushed.

Another great option for nature lovers is the Gresso River Walkways, one of the easiest outdoor activities in the area.

The route is relatively short (around 2 km / 1.2 miles round trip) and easy to follow, making it a great activity for families with children or anyone looking for a relaxed walk in nature. Along the way, you will find wooden walkways, small river views, and plenty of greenery.

The truth is that one day in Sever do Vouga is enough to visit the town’s main attractions and enjoy a slower pace of travel.

Since Sever do Vouga is relatively small, it works particularly well as a day trip from Porto or Aveiro, especially if you enjoy nature, waterfalls, and quieter destinations away from the usual tourist crowds.

However, if you prefer slow travel or want more time to explore the surrounding area, spending a weekend here can also be a great option.

One of the best things about Sever do Vouga is that it can be visited year-round. Temperatures are generally mild and relatively similar to nearby Aveiro, making it a pleasant destination in most seasons.

That said, if you want to enjoy some of the region’s natural attractions, especially Cabreia Waterfall or the local river beaches, then summer is definitely the best time to visit. This is when temperatures are warmer and perfect for swimming or simply relaxing by the water.

Spring and early fall can also be excellent times to visit, particularly if you prefer fewer crowds and milder weather for hiking or outdoor activities.

Although Sever do Vouga is a small destination, there are still some great places to eat.

If I had to recommend one restaurant, it would definitely be Quinta do Barco. The setting is lovely, the food is excellent, and the octopus skewers are genuinely delicious.

And don’t leave without trying dessert! Sever do Vouga is particularly famous for its blueberries, so if you find a dessert featuring them, I highly recommend giving it a try.
