Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park is one of Portugal’s most underrated destinations. Home to impressive caves, dinosaur footprints over 175 million years old and unique landscapes, it offers far more than most visitors expect.

Yet, despite being located less than 1h30 from Lisbon, it remains largely overlooked by travelers exploring Portugal. And that’s part of what makes it so special.

Natural Monument of Dinosaurs Footprints of Serra de Aire

I discovered the region almost by accident while planning a weekend getaway. In fact, I originally booked a stay at the charming Cooking and Nature Emotional Hotel and only then started researching what there was to see nearby. As it turns out, there was much more than I had imagined.

From exploring the famous Mira de Aire Caves and walking among dinosaur footprints to visiting the fairy-tale-like Porto de Mós Castle, I quickly realized there was much more to see than I had initially expected.

In this guide, I’ll share some of my favorite places to visit in the park, practical tips for planning your trip, and my experience staying at one of the most unique hotels in the region.

Where is Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park?

Located in central Portugal, Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park is one of the country’s most fascinating natural areas. The park stretches across several municipalities, including Porto de Mós, Alcobaça, Rio Maior, and parts of Leiria District.

One of the things that makes it such a great destination is its proximity to Lisbon. Located less than 90 minutes from the Portuguese capital, Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park is perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway.

Known for its caves, limestone landscapes, dinosaur footprints, and picturesque villages, the park offers a completely different side of Portugal that many visitors never get to experience.

How to get to Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park

The easiest way to visit Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park is by car. While there are public transportation options to some nearby towns, many of the park’s main attractions are spread across the region and are difficult to reach without your own vehicle.

Having a car will also give you the flexibility to explore at your own pace, stopping at viewpoints, caves, villages, and other points of interest along the way.

If you’re traveling from Lisbon, the drive takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on which part of the park you’re visiting.

🚗 If you need a rental car, I recommend comparing prices through Discover Cars. It’s the platform I usually use to compare offers from different rental companies and find the best rates for my trips.

You can also filter by things like insurance and reviews, which helps avoid unpleasant surprises at pick-up.

Where to stay in Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park

Truth be told, the reason I ended up visiting Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park was the hotel itself.

Have you ever booked a hotel first and only then started planning the trip around it? That’s exactly what happened to me. After coming across Cooking and Nature Emotional Hotel, I knew I wanted to stay there, and only afterwards did I start researching what there was to see in the region.

Located in the peaceful village of Alvados, right in the heart of Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, the hotel feels like a hidden retreat surrounded by nature. If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend getaway from Lisbon, I honestly can’t think of many better places.

Serra Aire e Candeeiros Cooking and Nature

One of the things I liked most was the attention to detail. With just 12 rooms, the hotel feels intimate and personal.

Every room is inspired by a different movie, and during my stay, I was assigned the Amélie room.

At check-in, the staff took the time to explain the hotel’s concept and even gave us a welcome bag with information about the region, some cookies, and a DVD related to our room’s theme.

The property also features both indoor and outdoor pools, making it a great option year-round.

However, one of the highlights of my stay was the breakfast. Made with local products, everything felt fresh, homemade, and thoughtfully prepared. It was exactly the kind of slow morning I was hoping for when planning this trip.

Another unique feature is the hotel’s dining experience.

As the name suggests, food plays an important role here, and guests can even participate in preparing parts of the meal. While I didn’t personally try this experience, it’s one of the aspects that makes the hotel stand out from more traditional accommodations in Portugal.

Would I stay here again? Absolutely.

If you’re looking for a unique place to stay in Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, somewhere peaceful, full of character, and perfectly located for exploring the region, Cooking and Nature Emotional Hotel is well worth considering.

With only 12 rooms available, I recommend booking well in advance, especially for weekends and holidays.

This site preserves what is considered one of the most important dinosaur trackways in the world, with footprints dating back around 175 million years.

Walking through the site and seeing evidence of creatures that roamed the Earth during the Jurassic period is a fascinating experience, even if you’re not particularly interested in paleontology.

I’ll admit that some of the footprints require a bit of imagination to spot. However, others are surprisingly clear and easy to identify, making it easier to appreciate the significance of what you’re looking at.

  • When to visit? From Tuesday to Sunday (they’re open on Mondays during August)
  • Are the tours guided? No, unless booked in advance. The route is well-marked and has information along the way.
  • How long does the visit last? Around 1 to 1.5 hours.
  • What is the price of the ticket? 3€/3.4 USDfor adults

» Mira de Aire Caves

Even though I’m not usually a huge fan of caves, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to visit one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal.

Located within Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, the Mira de Aire Caves are among the most impressive caves in Portugal. The cave system stretches for around 11 kilometers (6.8 miles), although only about 600 meters (1,970 feet) are accessible to visitors.

Serra Aire e Candeeiros Mira Aire Caves

The guided tour takes you deep underground through a series of chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and impressive rock formations. Even if caves aren’t normally your thing, I think there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy this visit.

» Porto de Mós

Another highlight of the region is the town of Porto de Mós.

The main attraction here is Porto de Mós Castle, one of the most distinctive castles in Portugal thanks to its elegant green towers and unusual architecture. Sitting above the town, it almost looks like something straight out of a fairy tale.

Even if you’re not particularly interested in castles, it’s worth stopping by to admire the building and enjoy the views over the surrounding landscape. Combined with a stroll through the town, it makes for a pleasant and easy stop while exploring Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park.

However, if you have the time, I recommend spending at least one night in the region. This will allow you to visit places such as the Mira de Aire Caves, the Dinosaur Footprints Natural Monument, and Porto de Mós at a more relaxed pace while also enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the area.

Personally, I think a weekend is the ideal amount of time. It gives you the opportunity to explore the park without rushing and discover some of the lesser-known corners that make this region so special.

Best time to visit Serras de Aire e Candeeiros

Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park can be visited year-round, but spring and fall are generally the best times to go.

During these seasons, temperatures are pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities, and the landscapes are often at their most beautiful.
