The Èze medieval village dates back to the Middle Ages, although the area was already settled much earlier by the Romans. Its hilltop position wasn’t just for the views. It was built this way for protection, which is why today you’ll find narrow cobblestone streets, stone buildings, and a layout that feels almost untouched by time.
As you walk through the village, you’ll notice how often the views open up. One moment you’re in a quiet alley, and the next you’re looking out over the coastline. It’s easily one of the best places for panoramic views on the Riviera.
Also, Èze isn’t packed with attractions, and that’s part of its charm. It’s more about slowing down, wandering without a plan, and enjoying the atmosphere as you go.
How to plan a day trip to Èze from Nice
Èze is one of the easiest places to visit on a day trip from Nice. It’s close, well-connected, and simple to combine with other stops along the coast. That’s why it’s often listed among the best day trips from Nice, especially if you want something different from the usual seaside towns.
What makes Èze special is its location. While places like Villefranche-sur-Mer, Menton, or Monaco sit by the sea, Èze is perched on a hilltop. This changes everything about how you get there and how you experience it.
» Getting to Èze by bus (best option)
Taking the bus to Èze village from Nice is, in my opinion, the easiest and most practical option.
Unlike other towns on the Riviera, the Èze train station sits down by the sea (it’s called Èze-sur-Mer). From there, you still need to go up to the village. That means either hiking about 2 km (1.2 mi) uphill or catching another bus, which can take around 40 minutes on foot.
The bus solves this. It takes you straight to the top, right near the entrance of the village, which makes the whole experience much smoother.
- Bus numbers: 82 or 112
- Duration: around 30–40 minutes
- Price: about 1.7€ (2 USD)
However, there are a couple of downsides. The schedule is more limited than the train, and buses aren’t always reliable. When I visited, the return bus showed up more than 30 minutes late.
Even so, I’d still recommend it. It’s simple, and the ride is surprisingly scenic.
For tickets, you can use the Lignes d’Azur app to buy and validate them. Another option is the “La Carte” card, which costs 2€ (~2.3 USD) at Grand Arénas tram stop. Just avoid buying it at the airport, where it costs 10€/11.6 USD.
🎫 If you want something different, there’s this 3-hour experience with pickup in Nice. You’ll drive along the coast in a vintage-style car and stop to explore Èze. It’s more expensive, but you don’t have to worry about logistics, and the drive itself becomes part of the experience.

The train is a faster option at first, but it adds an extra step.
You’ll take a train from Nice Ville to Èze-sur-Mer, which takes about 15 minutes and costs around 4.6€ (5.4 USD). From there, you still need to get up to the village.
You can either hike the Nietzsche Trail, which takes around 45 minutes uphill, or catch bus 83 to the top.
This option works best if you actually want to do the hike. Otherwise, it ends up being less convenient than the bus.

Driving from Nice to Èze takes about 20 minutes, but it’s not the easiest option.
There’s a small parking lot near the village entrance, and you can also find street parking. Just keep in mind you’ll need to pay at a ticket machine, and spaces fill up quickly, especially in peak season.
I wouldn’t recommend renting a car just for this, but it works if you’re already driving through the region.

Two of the most well-known stays are La Chèvre d’Or and Château Eza. Both have incredible views over the Mediterranean and a very exclusive feel.
Another option just outside the village is Les Terrasses d’Èze – Hotel & Spa. The highlight here is the infinity pool overlooking the coast. It’s one of those views you don’t forget.
That said, I personally chose not to stay in Èze. I based myself in Nice instead, and I think it’s the more practical choice for most travelers.
It’s quite easy in terms of logistics, especially for getting to Èze, and there are far more accommodation options at better prices.
I stayed at Residence Share Inn and had a great experience. It’s very central, comfortable, and worked really well as a base to explore the French Riviera.

Èze might be small, but there’s more to see than you’d expect at first glance. The village isn’t about rushing from one attraction to another. It’s about wandering, stopping when something catches your eye, and taking in the views along the way.

The Jardin Exotique d’Èze is the main highlight of the village, and honestly, it’s the one place you shouldn’t skip.
It’s a botanical garden built on the ruins of an old fortress at the very top of Èze. But to be honest, you don’t come here for the plants. You come for the views.
From the top, you get panoramic views over the coastline that are some of the best I saw during my time on the French Riviera. It’s one of those places where you’ll want to stop for a while and just take it all in.
You’ll also notice a series of sculptures spread throughout the garden. These were created by artist Jean-Philippe Richard and add a different feel as you walk around.

- Tickets: you can buy them at a machine in the village or online in advance

It’s also worth popping into a few of the local shops. Even if you’re not buying anything, they’re part of the experience.

3. Visit Église Notre-Dame de l’Assomption
The Église Notre-Dame de l’Assomption is a quick but worthwhile stop while exploring the village.
From the outside, it’s simple. But once you step inside, the contrast is clear. The interior has a more detailed, baroque style that stands out compared to the rest of Èze.
It won’t take long to visit, but it’s worth stepping in for a few minutes, especially since it’s free.

One of the most popular things to do in Èze is to sit down for a drink or a meal with a view.
Places like Château Eza and La Chèvre d’Or are known for their terraces overlooking the Mediterranean. The setting is hard to beat.
Even just stopping for a drink can be worth it if you want to enjoy the view without committing to a full meal.
That said, prices are high. I personally skipped this because it didn’t fit my budget at the time. If you’re planning to go, it’s best to book in advance, especially during high season, as these spots fill up quickly.
5. Visit the Fragonard perfume factory
Visiting the Fragonard perfume factory is one of the easiest and most interesting stops in the village.
The visit is free, but it follows a fixed schedule. I actually missed the last tour by just a few minutes, which was frustrating, so make sure you time it properly.
The tour gives you a quick look into how perfumes are made, and it’s also a good place to pick up a souvenir that’s a bit more meaningful than the usual shops.
Here are the visit times:
- French tours:
9.00 am to 5.30 pm, every 30 minutes until 12.00 pm
Resume at 1.15 pm, then 2.00 pm, and again every 30 minutes until 5.30 pm - English tours:
9.15 am to 5.45 pm, every 30 minutes

It’s also very easy to reach from the center of Èze, just a short walk away.
6. Hike the Nietzsche Path to Èze-sur-Mer
If you want to add something more active to your visit, hiking the Nietzsche trail is a great option.
This trail connects the village to the coast and is one of the most well-known routes in the area.
- Distance (both ways): around 5 km/3.1 mi
- Duration (one way): about 1h to 1h30
- Difficulty: moderate
The path is clearly marked, and you’ll find signs near the exit of the village pointing you in the right direction.
Also, here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

- Avoid doing it in the middle of the day, especially in summer

7. Visit Èze-sur-Mer
If you follow the trail down, you’ll reach Èze-sur-Mer, which gives you a completely different perspective of the area.

Just keep in mind that it’s a rocky beach, not sandy. Bringing water shoes makes a big difference and will make it much more comfortable.

Arrive in the village and begin by walking through the streets. This is the best time to explore while it’s still quiet. Take your time, wander without a plan, and enjoy the atmosphere.
After that, head to the Jardin Exotique d’Èze. Visiting in the morning means fewer people and better light for photos. It’s also cooler, which makes the experience more enjoyable.
By midday, the village gets busier, so it’s a good moment to slow down.
If it fits your budget, stop for lunch or a drink with a view. Even a short break here gives you time to enjoy the setting.
After that, visit the Fragonard perfume factory. The tour is quick, and it’s easy to fit into your afternoon without rushing.
If you still have time and energy, you can extend your day by heading down to the sea.
Follow the Nietzsche trail from the village to the coast. Once you reach Èze-sur-Mer, you can relax at Plage d’Èze before heading back.
From there, it’s easy to return to Nice by train, which makes this a nice way to end the day without going back uphill.
Best time to visit Èze
The best time to visit Èze is early in the morning or later in the afternoon. This is when the village feels calmer and much easier to explore.
Midday is the busiest time, especially in summer. The streets are quite narrow, and it can get a bit chaotic when tour groups arrive. That said, if you move away from the main paths, you can still find quieter corners with almost no one around.
Seasonally, here’s what to expect:
- Summer brings warm weather, usually around 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), but also bigger crowds
- Spring and fall are the best balance, with fewer people and more comfortable temperatures
- Winter is quieter, but some places close or have reduced hours
I visited on a weekend in early October, and it worked really well. There were still some crowds, but nothing overwhelming. The weather was pleasant during the day, and it only got slightly cooler in the evening.
How long do you need in Èze?
You can visit Èze in half a day, but a full day gives you a more relaxed experience.
If you’re short on time, a few hours are enough to walk through the village and visit the main highlights. That’s exactly what I did. I spent an afternoon there, explored without a strict plan, and still had time to visit the Jardin Exotique, which was one of the highlights.

One of them is hiking the Nietzsche Path. This path connects Èze Village to Èze-sur-Mer by the coast. It’s about 5 km/3.1 mi long and takes roughly 1h30 uphill. The trail is named after Friedrich Nietzsche, who spent time in the area in the late 19th century.
Another reason is simply to slow down and enjoy a long lunch with a view. Some of the restaurants here are more about the setting than the food, so taking your time makes a big difference.
In the end, it depends on your pace. If you like to explore slowly and enjoy the views, give yourself a full day. If not, a half-day visit still works really well.
