Between historic streets, cable cars, nearby natural pools, and excellent local restaurants, there are plenty of things to see in Funchal.

Is Funchal worth visiting?

I completely understand that most people don’t travel to Madeira specifically to visit Funchal.

Usually, the main goal is to explore the island’s dramatic landscapes, hike the famous trails, discover scenic viewpoints, and visit Madeira’s natural pools.

Still, I really think it’s worth spending at least one day in Funchal.

Besides being Madeira’s main city, Funchal has a very pleasant atmosphere for walking around, especially in Funchal Old Town and along the seafront promenade. Between tropical gardens, traditional markets, and cable cars, there are easily enough attractions to fill a full day.

Madeira Funchal Quick Guide Monte Palace
Monte Palace Tropical Garden

Another reason why I think Funchal is worth visiting is its location. The city works as an excellent base for exploring Madeira, since many of the island’s main attractions are less than one hour away by car.

On top of that, there’s a huge variety of hotels, restaurants, and organized tours, which makes everything much easier for first-time visitors to Madeira.

So even if your main focus is exploring Madeira’s nature, don’t underestimate Funchal. The city surprised me much more than I expected.

How to get to Funchal

Getting to Funchal is quite easy, with Madeira Airport receiving direct flights from several European cities throughout the year. Airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet, TAP Air Portugal, and British Airways operate regular routes to the island.

If you can’t find direct flights from your country, a good alternative is to fly first to Lisbon or Porto, as both cities have several daily direct flights to Funchal.

If you book your flights in advance, it’s often possible to find fairly affordable fares, especially outside the peak summer season.

Madeira Airport is located in Santa Cruz, around a 20-minute drive from Funchal city center. To get into the city, you can choose between:

  • Aerobus (direct connection to central Funchal)
  • rental car
  • private transfer
  • taxi or Uber/Bolt

🚗 If you’re planning to explore more of Madeira beyond Funchal, I definitely recommend renting a car. Many of the island’s best viewpoints, hiking trails, natural pools, and traditional restaurants are located outside the city, and having a car gives you much more flexibility to explore at your own pace.

Accommodation in Funchal

There’s no shortage of accommodation options in Funchal. During my trip, I stayed in a local accommodation less than a 10-minute walk from Funchal’s historic center.

I stayed at ASPA Studios when I visited Funchal. The apartment was very well equipped and even had a kitchen. The apartments are inserted in an old building that has been completely remodeled.

In addition, a generous breakfast was included every morning and served in a lovely outdoor area. The breakfast included fresh fruit juice, coffee, fruit, scrambled eggs, cheese, ham, jam, butter, and a selection of traditional bread and pastries. I also liked that the options varied throughout the three days I stayed there.

The only downside was the lack of parking. Around the accommodation, most parking spaces were paid, which can be a bit inconvenient if you’rerenting a car to explore Madeira.

Nevertheless, there are many options available in Funchal. Check out some of them:

Best things to do in Funchal

Funchal has much more to offer than many people expect at first glance. Between tropical gardens, traditional markets, historic streets, scenic viewpoints, and unique Madeira experiences, there are easily enough attractions to fill one or two days in the city.

So, here are some of the best things to do in Funchal based on my own experience visiting Madeira.

And at the end of this guide, I’ll also share a simple Funchal one-day itinerary with the places I think are most worth visiting if you only have one day in Funchal.

» Monte Cable Car

If there’s one thing Madeira Island has plenty of, it’s cable cars. Funchal is no exception and, for this reason, one of the most spectacular cable car rides on the island is in Madeira’s capital.

Madeira Funchal Quick Guide Cable Car

The trip takes about 15 minutes (one way) and from there, the views over Funchal are incredible.

The cable car is quite high, so I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone suffering from vertigo or afraid of heights.

📝 USEFUL INFORMATION: The Funchal cable car is open every day from 8.45 am to 5.45 pm. Tickets cost 22€ (26 USD) round trip or 16€ (19 USD) one way. You can check the most up-to-date information before your visit.

💡 EXTRA TIP: The Cable Car starts near the Old Town and is an excellent option for going up to the Monte Palace Tropical Garden.

» Monte Palace Tropical Garden

Located on top of a hill, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden is clearly one of the unmissable places in Funchal.

In my opinion, the price is a bit excessive for what it is, but the garden is very beautiful indeed.

Madeira Funchal Quick Guide Monte Palace
Madeira Funchal Quick Guide Monte Palace

Covering an area of around 70,000 m² (17 acres), Monte Palace is possibly the most beautiful garden in Funchal. The garden is extremely well maintained and filled with exotic plants, small lakes, sculptures, and even a few animals roaming freely around the property.

The garden can be explored freely, but given its size, there are three recommended routes, the longest being 2h30. Along the various routes, we find sculptures from the four corners of the world that make us travel far.

📝 USEFUL INFORMATION: Adult tickets cost 18€ (21 USD). Monte Palace Tropical Garden is open daily from 9 am to 7 pm between April and September, and from 9 am to 6 pm during the remaining months of the year. You can check the most up-to-date information before your visit.

Right next to Monte Palace Tropical Garden, Nossa Senhora do Monte Sanctuary is worth a visit. The church was built in the 18th century and is dedicated to the city’s patron saint.

» Monte Toboggan Ride (Carreiros do Monte)

This is one of the most picturesque tours one can take in Madeira.

Carreiros do Monte appeared in the 19th century as a means of transport for the local inhabitants to get from the parish of Monte to Funchal.

Madeira Funchal Quick Guide Cestos

The ride starts near Nossa Senhora do Monte Sanctuary and is a great way to get back down to the city of Funchal after a visit to Monte Palace Tropical Garden.

Adrenaline is definitely part of the experience since the ride covers around 2 km (1.2 miles) and the traditional wicker sledges can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph).

Madeira Funchal Quick Guide Cestos

📝 USEFUL INFORMATION: Prices vary depending on the number of people per sledge, with the lowest price starting at 20€ (23.5 USD) per person. More information.

💡 EXTRA TIP: Even if you choose not to go down Madeira’s famous toboggan ride, this tourist attraction is worth checking out.

» Madeira’s Botanical Garden

Close to Monte Palace, you can take another cable car to the Madeira Botanical Garden (11€/13 USD one way or 14€/16 USD round trip).

The Madeira Botanical Garden is another beautiful green space in Funchal. Located at Quinta do Bom Sucesso, a historic estate dating back to 1881, the garden covers an area of around 20 acres (80,000 m²).

There are also combined ticket options that include the cable car ride. You can buy your Madeira Botanical Garden cable car ticket online in advance.

» Farmers’ Market (“Lavradores” Market)

To visit Funchal and not enter the Lavradores Market would be a shame.

» Barreirinha Beach and Largo do Socorro Viewpoint

And if the weather permits, why not take a refreshing dip at Barreirinha beach?

Just keep in mind that this isn’t a sandy beach, but rather a seaside bathing complex, perfect for swimming and relaxing by the ocean.

If the weather is not inviting, you can always stay for the views at Largo do Socorro Viewpoint.

Although not located in the Old Town of Funchal, the Municipal Square is another must-see in this city.

Here you will find the Town Hall (whose interior is visitable), São João Evangelista Church and a very old Fountain.

💡 EXTRA TIP: One of the most popular things to do in Funchal is whale and dolphin watching. Madeira is considered one of the best places in Europe for this type of experience, with tours running almost year-round and several departures from Funchal Marina.

» Lido Promenade

A little away from the historic centre, the Lido Promenade is mainly a bathing area.

In fact, the Lido Promenade is a pleasant seafront promenade, with various cafés and restaurants close by.

From there, you can easily access several bathing complexes, such as Doca do Cavacas or Poças do Governador, for example.

» Formosa Beach

Praia Formosa is the only “real” beach in Funchal, although it’s worth knowing that it has very little sand and is mostly covered in pebbles.

Stretching for around 2 km (1.2 miles), this beach, which is actually divided into four sections, is one of the favorite beach spots among locals.

How to spend one day in Funchal

If you only have one day in Funchal, the good news is that you can still visit many of the city’s main attractions. The key is to organize your route well and combine some of the most iconic sights with pleasant areas to walk around at a slower pace.

This Funchal itinerary was designed for travelers wanting to make the most of one day in Funchal, including gardens, viewpoints, traditional markets, historic streets, and some of the city’s most typical experiences.

» Morning in Funchal

Start your day with one of Madeira’s most iconic experiences: the Funchal cable car. Besides being a beautiful ride, it offers some of the best views over the city.

Afterward, take some time to visit:

  • Monte Palace Tropical Garden
  • Church of Our Lady of Monte
  • Monte Toboggan Ride

» Afternoon in Funchal

During the afternoon, the best option is to explore the city center, Funchal Old Town, and the seafront area.

Your route can include:

  • Avenida do Mar
  • Santa Catarina Park
  • Avenida Arriaga
  • Municipal Square
  • Mercado dos Lavradores
  • Santa Maria Street
  • Capela do Corpo Santo
  • São Tiago Fortress
  • Church of Santiago Menor

» Late Afternoon in Funchal

To end the day, I recommend watching the sunset near Praia da Barreirinha. It’s a peaceful place to relax after a full day exploring the city.

If you want to make the evening even more special, you can also join this sunset sailing tour, which offers incredible views over Madeira’s coastline at the end of the day.

Restaurants in Funchal

Madeiran food is probably some of the best in Portugal. Interestingly though, the best restaurants I found on the island were actually outside Funchal.

Still, since most places in Madeira are relatively close by car, I also wanted to share a few excellent restaurants located just outside the city.

  • [Funchal] A Gruta (€€€): a very nice place right next to the Harbour, where we tried picado and a very nice seafood rice with octopus.
  • [Funchal] A Bica (€€): simple place, located next to the Lavradores Market. Tasty traditional food at interesting prices.
  • [Funchal] Barreirinha Bar Café (€€): a very nice bar right by the sea. The house specialities are “pregos” in “bolo do caco” and hamburgers. It is also worth mentioning the Nikita, which was the best one I drank on this trip.
  • [Camâra de Lobos – 10 min drive] O Polar (€): They only serve skewers and barbecue chicken, but the skewers
are simply divine. In addition, the price is absolutely fantastic.
  • [Camacha – 20 min drive] Abrigo do Pastor (€€): Very traditional restaurant with very well-prepared dishes. Excellent value for money and attentive service. We tried the regional skewers and magnificent bean rice as a side dish.
  • [Santa Cruz – 18 min drive] A Bilheteira (€): a simple restaurant, but with an excellent “picado” and “prego” in “bolo do caco”.

Madeiran food was honestly one of the things that surprised me the most during my trip to the island. Between bolo do caco, espetadas, poncha, and Nikita, there are plenty of traditional flavors worth trying. You can check out this guide to discover the typical foods and drinks in Madeira that you really shouldn’t miss.

🎫 If you enjoy discovering destinations through food, then this food tour in Funchal is definitely worth considering. Along the way, you’ll taste several traditional Madeiran specialties while learning more about the island’s culture and history with a local guide.

Best time to visit Funchal

The city of Funchal is located on the southern coast of Madeira, which is usually the part of the island with the best weather conditions. In general, temperatures tend to be warmer here and cloudy days are less frequent.

Madeira Funchal Quick Guide Farmers Market
Farmer’s Market

In fact, any time of the year is a good time to visit Madeira and, consequently, Funchal.

Madeira’s weather is widely envied as temperatures do not vary that much all year round and it is rarely very cold.

Anyway, to enjoy the island in its fullness (trails, beaches, natural pools), it is always preferable to visit during the hottest months: May to October. These are also, as you might expect, the busiest months.

Madeira Funchal Quick Guide Streets
Santa Maria Street

There are also some well-known festivities throughout the year that easily justify a visit to Funchal:

  • New Year’s Eve Party (31st of December) with one of the best firework shows in Portugal
  • Flower Festival (May)
  • Market Night Party (23rd of December) at the Farmers’ Market
  • Nossa Senhora do Monte Festival (15th of August): the biggest religious celebration in Madeira
  • Carnival

How many days in Funchal

This city is not huge, but it still has some points of interest.

This way, although it is possible to visit the most emblematic places in 1 day, I suggest booking 2 days or a day and a half to visit Funchal.

Madeira Funchal Quick Guide Streets
Dr. Fernão de Ornelas Street

Moreover, except for two or three places (Monte Palace Tropical Garden or Lido Promenade, for example), we easily walk around the city without needing a car.

Final thoughts

I hope this guide helps you plan your one day in Funchal and make the most of your time in Madeira’s capital. Even if you only have one day available, you can still visit many of the city’s most iconic attractions and get a great first impression of the island.

Between tropical gardens, traditional markets, historic streets, scenic viewpoints, and typical Madeiran experiences, Funchal ended up surprising me with how many things there are to do. And while this Funchal itinerary includes many of the city’s highlights, there are always more places to discover if you have extra time.

Madeira Funchal Quick Guide Town Hall Square
Town Hall

If possible, I also highly recommend using Funchal as a base to explore the rest of Madeira. The island is filled with incredible landscapes, panoramic roads, hiking trails, and some of the best travel experiences I’ve had in Portugal.

So, is Funchal worth visiting? Absolutely. Even if nature is the main reason you’re traveling to Madeira, I still think spending at least one day in Funchal is completely worth it.

Which of these places would you most like to visit in Funchal? 😊
