Fragas de São Simão: how to visit, what to see, and useful tips

Table of contents

Fragas de São Simão were one of those discoveries that made me realize Portugal can still surprise me.

I didn’t have high expectations either… but I quickly realized this is one of those places that stays with you. Between the river beach, the wooden walkways, and the natural surroundings, it’s a simple plan, but incredibly complete.

Throughout this guide, you will find all the necessary information to visit Fragas de São Simão as well as the village of Casal de São Simão and the Fragas de São Simão walkway. You will also find tips about restaurants and accommodation in the region.

And if you’re planning to explore more of the region, make sure to check out my guide with other places to visit in Central Portugal.

📍 Fragas de São Simão – quick info

Location: Figueiró dos Vinhos, Leiria
Parking: village, river beach, or viewpoint
Trail distance: ~4 km (2.5 miles) round trip
Difficulty: easy to moderate
Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours (without swimming)
Highlights: river beach, wooden walkways, and viewpoint
Best time to visit: spring, fall, and summer (for swimming)

How to get to Fragas de São Simão?

Fragas de São Simão is located in Figueiró dos Vinhos, which belongs to the district of Leiria.

If you’re traveling from Porto, the drive is straightforward and takes about 1h35 (162 km / 101 miles). From Lisbon, the journey is similar, at around 1h50 (178 km / 111 miles).

Without a doubt, the easiest way to reach Fragas de São Simão is by car. In practice, visiting without one is quite challenging, as public transport options are very limited.

🚗Renting a car in Portugal can get confusing fast, especially when different companies show very different prices for what looks like the same car.

I usually use DiscoverCars to compare options across multiple rental companies in one place. It makes it much easier to spot the best value and avoid overpriced deals.

You can also filter by things like insurance and reviews, which helps avoid unpleasant surprises at pick-up.

Best time of the year to visit Fragas de São Simão

Although Fragas de São Simão is most popular in the summer thanks to its river beach, it’s a great place to visit year-round.

That said, during the hotter months, walking the Fragas de São Simão walkways can be more challenging due to the high temperatures.

I’d avoid visiting on rainy days or right after it’s rained, as the trail can become muddy and slippery, making the visit much more difficult.

What to visit at Fragas de São Simão and how to plan your visit

In fact, visiting Fragas de São Simão implies visiting several places.

We are talking about the Fragas de São Simão walkway, the village of Casal de São Simão, the river beach of Fragas de São Simão and the Fragas de São Simão viewpoint.

Visit Fragas de São Simão Casal de São Simão
Casal de São Simão Village

Although you can visit each of these spots separately, it makes much more sense to combine them into one route.

I recommend following this order: Casal de São Simão village → Fragas de São Simão river beach → Fragas de São Simão walkways → viewpoint.

If you prefer, you can start at the viewpoint and follow the route in reverse. The full trail is about 4 km (2.5 miles) round trip. If you’re not planning to swim at the river beach, set aside around 1 to 1.5 hours to see everything at a relaxed pace.

💡 EXTRA TIP: There is parking available in the village, at the river beach, and near the viewpoint. However, spaces are limited in both the village and at the viewpoint. During peak times, it’s often easier to park at the river beach and start the trail from there.

» Casal de São Simão Village

The village of Casal de São Simão is one of the 27 Schist Villages in Portugal. Although it doesn’t have many “classic” attractions, it’s the kind of place where you’ll want to slow down and explore at your own pace.

Visit Fragas de São Simão Casal de São Simão

The schist houses, narrow streets, and natural surroundings make it very photogenic 🥰. It’s worth taking a walk through the village, noticing the details, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.

» Fragas de São Simão River Beach

A 15-minute walk from the village (about 1 km / 0.6 miles) brings you to the Fragas de São Simão river beach. The path is pleasant and shaded, winding through dense vegetation most of the way.

The river beach is a favorite with locals looking to cool off in the summer months. Just don’t expect warm water—it’s refreshing, to say the least.

» Walkway of Fragas de São Simão

Although the entire route from the village is considered part of the walkway, the most prominent section only begins at the river beach, where you’ll find a long wooden staircase.

Up to that point, while there are a few short stretches of wooden boardwalk, most of the trail is made up of dirt paths.

Visit Fragas de São Simão Walkway

If you start the stairs at the Fragas de São Simão river beach, you’ll be heading uphill from the beginning. The climb is close to 1 km (0.6 miles), but the views along the way make it worthwhile—and with a few breaks, it feels very manageable.

💡 EXTRA TIP: If you’re doing the round trip, you’ll need to go both up and down the stairs. Keep in mind that this section is fully exposed to the sun, so it can feel quite intense on hotter days.

» Fragas de São Simão Viewpoint

And as if the views along the way weren’t impressive enough, the climb ends with a panoramic viewpoint over Fragas de São Simão.

After reaching the viewpoint, it’s time to head back to the starting point. Overall, the trail is quite manageable, with the staircase being the most demanding section.

Accommodation near Fragas de São Simão

Given the size of the place where Fragas de São Simão are located, there are not many accommodations nearby.

However, I’ll share some suggestions for accommodation not far from Fragas de São Simão.

Restaurant in Casal de São Simão

There is only one restaurant in the village of Casal de São Simão – Varandas do Casal

The concept of the restaurant is sharing. For this reason, the ideal is to order a platter of regional starters and one of the dishes of the day to share. I chose the codfish “tiborna”, which was divine.

And the best part was the “almost panoramic” view from the restaurant! However, the restaurant is very small, so I recommend booking in advance.
