I’ve personally done the Cross Country Tour twice and absolutely loved it. The two hours fly by, and it’s a great introduction to off-road driving around Porto. In fact, if you’re short on time, I still think it’s an excellent choice.

However, if I were booking today, I would choose the 3-hour Adventure Tour.

Not only do you get more time behind the wheel, but you also get to explore more of the region. The route includes additional off-road sections and extra stops, including Quintandona and the Roman ruins of Castro Mozinho.

In my opinion, these stops make the experience feel more complete and allow you to discover a side of northern Portugal that most visitors never see.

The departure point for these buggy tours is in Baltar, a small town located about 30 minutes from Porto. Depending on the option you choose, transportation from Porto may also be available. Alternatively, you can easily reach Baltar by Uber, which is what I would recommend if you don’t have a car and don’t want to include the pick-up in the tour.

Once you arrive, the guides will explain how the buggy works, go over the safety rules, and provide all the necessary equipment, including a helmet and protective goggles. You’ll also need to sign a liability waiver before setting off.

One thing many people don’t realize is that you’ll be the one driving the buggy throughout the tour.

Don’t worry if you’ve never driven one before, though. The controls are very straightforward, and after a few minutes behind the wheel, it feels surprisingly natural. Plus, there’s always a guide leading the group and available to help if needed.

After leaving Baltar, the adventure begins. While there are a few paved sections, most of the route takes place on dirt tracks and off-road trails through the countryside surrounding Porto. This is where the fun really starts.

I also quite enjoyed the variety of landscapes along the way. The route takes you through forests, rural roads, vineyards, and several scenic viewpoints overlooking the surrounding countryside.

Depending on the tour you choose, you’ll also stop in places such as Quintandona, a beautifully preserved traditional schist village.

The various stops along the route are also a great opportunity to take photos, enjoy the scenery, and switch drivers if both participants have a valid driver’s license.

• Wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. The buggies are open-sided, and dust is part of the experience. By the end of the tour, chances are you’ll be much dustier than you expected.
