Thinking about doing a classic VW bus tour in Porto? Then you’re in the right place.

You know those experiences you’ve always imagined doing at least once? Riding in a classic Volkswagen van was definitely one of mine. And honestly, I didn’t expect it to be this fun.

If you’re looking for a unique way to explore Porto without the usual walking tours, this might be exactly what you’re after.

Is the classic VW bus tour in Porto worth it?

This classic VW bus tour in Porto is absolutely worth it, especially if you want to see the city from a different perspective.

It’s not just about getting around. It’s about the experience itself: the open-top van, the relaxed pace, the unexpected viewpoints, and that feeling of doing something a bit different.

What to expect from a classic VW bus tour in Porto

This is a private sightseeing tour through some of Porto’s most iconic areas, mixed with lesser-known spots you probably wouldn’t find on your own.

If you’re planning your trip, I recommend checking my full Porto itinerary. It helps you combine this tour with the main highlights of the city.

During the tour, you’ll:

  • Ride in a classic VW bus through the city
  • Pass by key landmarks like Casa da Música and Clérigos Tower
  • Drive along the Douro riverfront and towards the Atlantic coast
  • Stop at panoramic viewpoints for photos
  • Explore both central areas and local neighborhoods

What I liked most is how easy everything felt. You don’t have to plan routes, check maps, or worry about getting around. You just sit back and enjoy the ride while still covering a good part of the city.

It’s ideal if you don’t want to walk too much, you’re short on time or you want something more memorable than a typical tour. Honestly, it ended up being one of the most fun things I’ve ever done in Porto.

My experience on the VW bus tour in Porto

It was 2:30 pm when the blue van picked us up at Freixo Harbour and that’s when the experience really started.

Sitting comfortably in the back, Hugo (our guide) took us through Porto in a completely different way. Not just the main spots, but also a few viewpoints I didn’t even know existed (and I lived in Porto since I was little!).

It was a sunny day, so we kept the top open. Now and then, we stood up to take some photos, feel the wind and just enjoy the moment.

People passing by looked intrigued, and many even waved. It almost felt like being in a movie, with us as the main characters. The van really stands out among all the cars in the city and I think that’s exactly what makes it feel so special.

What surprised me the most was how quickly the time passed. It’s one of those experiences where you don’t really check the clock… you’re just enjoying it.

The route (and some unexpected highlights)

From Freixo Harbour, we followed the Douro riverfront all the way to the Ribeira tunnel. From there, we drove up Mouzinho da Silveira Street towards downtown, continuing on to the Ceuta tunnel.

We then made our way to the Boavista roundabout and headed down Avenida da Boavista towards the Fort of São Francisco do Queijo. Along the way, we took a short detour to Matosinhos before returning via Avenida do Brasil towards Foz.

With the Arrábida Bridge in front of us, we climbed through narrow streets to reach the Santa Catarina viewpoint. This was definitely the first surprise of the day—an incredible view over the Douro that not many people know about. We took the chance to step out of the van and enjoy the moment (and take a few photos, of course).

Back in the van, the ride was still far from over. From Foz, we headed back toward downtown Porto, this time through even narrower streets. We passed locals having lunch on small terraces and eventually reached our second stop of the afternoon: the Vitória viewpoint.

After nearly three hours, it was time to head back to Freixo Harbour. But before ending the tour, we made one final stop at Serra do Pilar, which has some of my favorite views of Porto.

Why this tour stands out

What makes this experience different isn’t just the van. It’s how relaxed and personal everything feels.

You’re not rushing. You’re not following a big group. You’re just enjoying the city at your own pace, with someone who knows it well.

It’s also a great option if you’re visiting Porto for the first time and want a quick but complete overview of the city before exploring more on your own.

For me, the biggest surprise was how fun it actually was. I expected it to be nice… but it ended up being one of those experiences I’d genuinely recommend.
