Porto is an incredible city, there’s no doubt about that! It’s actually my favorite place in the whole world, though I admit I might be a bit biased (I’ve lived in Porto all my life) 😇.
Although visiting Porto is always a great idea, it’s worth knowing that we get quite a bit of rain here. The rainy season typically runs from October to March, and even in the sunnier months of July through September, showers can still sneak in.
That’s why it’s smart to be prepared with an umbrella, of course, but also with a list of things to do in Porto when it rains.
Thankfully, the city offers plenty of cozy spots and hidden gems that shine even when the weather doesn’t. From museums and wine cellars to cafes and bookstores, there are countless Porto indoor activities that let you enjoy the city without getting soaked.
So whether you’re mapping out your trip or caught in a sudden downpour, you’ll want to know exactly what to do on a rainy day in Porto.
In this guide, I’ll share my favorite suggestions for where to go on a rainy day in Porto based on personal experience, local tips, and a lifelong love of the city. Rain or shine, Porto has something special waiting for you.

Rainy days don’t have to dampen your plans. Porto in the rain can be just as magical as in the sun.
From cozy cafes to fun and interesting museums, there are plenty of things to do in Porto on a rainy day that let you enjoy the city’s charm while staying dry. Let’s dive into the best ways to make the most of a wet day in Porto.
1. Visit Port Wine Cellars
One of the most famous things about Porto is its Port wine. As such, one of the most popular activities in the city is to visit the famous Port wine cellars.
Located on the opposite bank of the Douro River (specifically in Vila Nova de Gaia), the wine cellars are the ideal place for aging Port wine.
There are several cellars (most of them located in Cais de Gaia) and this is a great option for those who’d like to know what to do in Porto when it rains.
I’ve personally visited the Poças wine cellar, and it completely exceeded my expectations. It feels intimate, genuine, and full of history. You can truly sense the family heritage behind every bottle.
Another favorite of mine is Cálem, where the experience ends with a live Fado performance. Sipping Port while listening to soulful Portuguese music is pure magic — an unforgettable moment that makes this tour absolutely worth booking.

2. Admire the beautiful interior of Stock Exchange Palace
The Stock Exchange Palace may not be the most obvious place to include on a Porto itinerary, but it’s one of my favorite buildings in the city. What’s more, it’s a perfect activity for rainy days in Porto.
Built at the end of the 19th century, it replaced the Casa da Bolsa de Comércio (Trade Exchange House), where merchants discussed a wide variety of issues related to their business.
Nowadays, although it is still the headquarters of the Porto Trade Association, it is mostly used for cultural purposes. The building is unbelievably beautiful inside, especially its famous Arab Room.

3. Have some dessert in one of Porto’s patisseries
There’s nothing better than a coffee and a pastry to cheer us up on a grey, rainy day 🤤.
There are hundreds of cafés in Porto, but here I am suggesting those where you can try some of the best sweets in the city. The winners are:
- Manteigaria for the best custard tarts (pastel de nata)
- Confeitaria do Bolhão: one of the city’s oldest patisseries
- Leitaria Quinta do Paço: iconic place in the city where you can try the best éclair in Porto
- Padaria Ribeiro: biscuit specialist, I particularly recommend the Primaveras

4. Have fun at the Wondersense Museum
If you’re looking for what to do in Porto on a rainy day, the Wondersense Museum is one of the most original and immersive indoor experiences in the city.
It’s perfect for families, kids, or groups of friends, inviting you to explore your senses through creative, interactive rooms that are as fun as they are unforgettable.
Located right in the city center, the museum is open every day from 10 am 6 pm (last entry), and the average visit lasts around 60 to 90 minutes.
One of the things I love most is that entry is staggered to keep each room from getting crowded, making the experience much more personal and immersive.
Whether you’re traveling with little ones or just want to enjoy something completely different, this is a fantastic way to spend a few dry hours in Porto. I highly recommend it!

Although I’m not a beer fan, I know that there are incredible places in the city to taste and try different craft beers.

How about enjoying the rain and wind outside in a heated pool? Sounds like the perfect match to me!
There are some hotels in Porto with a pool that you can use even if you aren’t staying there.
Here are some examples of hotels with indoor pools in Porto:
- Hotel Vila Galé Porto (Satsanga Spa Porto): in addition to the water circuit that costs 15€ for 1 hour, there are additional spa treatments
- Sheraton Porto Hotel & Spa: The daily pass costs 50€ and also gives access to other areas of the spa, such as the sauna, gym, jacuzzi, hammam and others.
- Porto Palácio Congress Hotel & Spa: Access to the Acqua Sensations therapeutic circuit costs 35€ and lasts a maximum of 90 minutes.
- Oca Flores Hotel Boutique
7. Visit the Portuguese Photography Centre
Located in a building that used to be a prison (Cadeia da Relação), you can visit some exhibitions at the Portuguese Photography Centre. This building, although not very busy, is one of the city’s most historic sites.

8. Let your inner child out at Banzai Pixel
If you’re looking for something active and out of the ordinary to do in Porto on a rainy day, Banzai Pixel is an absolute blast.
This isn’t just another indoor activity. It’s a full-on immersive challenge space where you’ll laugh, compete, and put your reflexes to the test.
One of the standout experiences is Banzai Pixel, a 45‑minute game where you and your team race against time across a glowing, reactive floor.
I gave it a try myself, and honestly? I can’t remember the last time I had that much fun.
It’s a great way to keep your energy up and your spirits high, even when the weather’s not cooperating. Whether you’re with friends or family, this is one rainy-day plan you won’t regret.
9. Explore the city’s museums
While it’s true that many of the most interesting things to do in Porto are outdoors, it’s also true that the city has some very interesting museums.
So, if it’s raining when you visit Porto, you know where to go. Here are some suggestions of the best museums in Porto:
- Soares dos Reis National Museum: admire works of art
- Misericórdia do Porto Museum: entry costs 10€

- Electric Car Museum: to learn more about the history of the electric car
10. Have fun at Neonia Museum
If you’re looking to brighten up a grey afternoon, a visit to the Neonia Museum is one of the coolest things to do in Porto when it rains. Located right in the heart of the city on Rua de Ceuta, Neonia is one of Porto’s best interactive museums and it’s nothing short of a visual playground.
With around 20 uniquely themed rooms, each one offers a different atmosphere filled with lights, color, and immersive design. Neonia delivers an experience that’s both fun and full of surprises.
It’s open Thursday to Monday from 10 am to 8 pm (until 9 pm on Saturdays), with the last entry at 6.30 pm, making it a perfect indoor plan if the weather turns on you. See what you can expect at Neonia.
11. Watch a concert at Casa da Música
The most peculiar building in the city of Porto is undoubtedly Casa da Música. Built in 2005, it quickly became one of the city’s most emblematic buildings.
Although the best way to enjoy Casa da Música is by attending a concert inside, it is also possible to take guided tours of the building. The tours cost 12€ and can be booked in advance.
12. Become part of the art at the 3D Fun Art Museum
If you’re wondering what to do in Porto when it’s raining, the 3D Fun Art Museum Porto is a must-visit. This interactive museum is all about illusions, optical tricks, and grabbing the perfect photo. You don’t just look at art, you step into it.
Expect to wander through rooms where gravity seems to shift, giant objects loom in perspective, and scenes like the Titanic, King Kong, superheroes, or angels are waiting for you to pose and play.
Staff are there to help guide you on how to maximize each shot (yes, you’ll want your phone or camera ready).
13. Have a coffee in one of the city’s most iconic cafés
There are cafés in Porto that are so charismatic that they are included in the city’s itineraries and travel guides.
The best example is the Majestic Café in Rua de Santa Catarina. The prices are prohibitive and there’s usually a queue to get in, but it’s certainly one of the most beautiful cafés in Porto.
Other iconic cafés in Porto include the classic and elegant Café Guarany, the historic A Brasileira or the student Café Piolho (also known as Café D’Ouro).

While it’s true that most people associate fado with the city of Lisbon, it’s undeniable that fado is part of Portuguese culture.
For this reason, the city of Porto is also an excellent place to attend a show of this type of Portuguese music.

15. Enjoy one of the immersive shows in the city
Another fantastic idea for what to do in Porto when it’s raining is to dive into the city’s incredible immersive light and sound shows. These aren’t just visual experiences. They’re full-on sensory journeys that combine music, storytelling, and breathtaking projections.
Most of these shows take place at Alfândega do Porto, where large-scale exhibitions bring iconic artworks and local legends to life. For example, you can explore the city’s mythical history with Porto Legends – The Underground Experience or enjoy a visually stunning art experience like Impressive Monet & Brilliant Klimt.
You’ll also find equally captivating shows inside the iconic Clérigos Church, where the baroque interior becomes the canvas for a magical performance. The show is called Spiritus and it’s a powerful multimedia show set in one of Porto’s most historic landmarks.
These shows are a true feast for the senses—blending light, sound, and storytelling to completely transform familiar spaces. Some reimagine iconic works by world-famous artists, while others take you deep into the myths and culture of Portugal.
16. Go to a covered terrace
Who says you can’t go to a terrace if it’s raining in Porto? There are some covered terraces in Porto that can be a great alternative for rainy days in Porto.
I have several suggestions to share with you. If you just want a snack or a coffee, I suggest Confeitaria Tavi, 7groaster, LEA – Food & Drinks or Noshi.
If you’re just going for a drink, I’d also recommend Esplanada do Teleférico – it has some of the best views of Porto, but the food is not that special and it’s quite overpriced due to its location.
For a more complete meal, you can always opt for one of the restaurants with indoor terraces in Porto. These are my suggestions:
17. Explore everything World of Wine has to offer
If you’re looking for Porto rainy day activities that go beyond the usual, World of Wine (WOW) is a fantastic option.
Located in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river from Porto’s historic center, WOW is a cultural district filled with museums, restaurants, and experiences, mostly indoors, and all perfect for escaping the rain.
Although it’s a relatively new addition to the city, WOW has quickly become one of Porto’s most popular attractions.
With several immersive museums to choose from, it’s hard to fit everything into one visit, but here’s a breakdown of what you can explore:
- The Chocolate Story: to learn more about the history of cocoa and how chocolate is made
- Planet Cork: a museum where you can learn more about cork
- Pink Palace: A bold, colorful museum dedicated to rosé wine. I visited this one myself, and even though I don’t drink wine, I absolutely loved it—the interactive rooms made it a super fun and unique experience.
- The Wine Experience: Discover the winemaking process from vineyard to glass, with a tasting at the end.
- The Bridge Collection: A stunning archaeological collection with over 2,000 historical drinking vessels.
- Porto Region Across the Ages: A time-traveling journey through the history of Porto and its surrounding region.
📝 USEFUL INFORMATION: The museums can be visited individually, but there are combined tickets for visiting several museums.
18. Sipping cocktails with views over the city
One of the best things to do in Porto when it’s raining is to have a cocktail while enjoying views of the city.
Two particularly beautiful places serve excellent cocktails and have superb views over Porto.
They are actually two hotels, but the bars can be accessed by people not staying in them. They are the 17.º Restaurante e Bar and also the Vincci Ponte de Ferro.
19. Gastronomic experience at Mercado do Bom Sucesso
When it comes to indoor things to do in Porto, Mercado do Bom Sucesso is a delicious option. This modern indoor market is the perfect place to take shelter from the rain while sampling a wide variety of food from across Portugal and beyond.
Whether you’re in the mood for fresh seafood, gourmet burgers, sushi, or traditional petiscos, the market’s many food stalls have something for every taste.
Open throughout the day, it’s a great spot for a casual lunch, quick dinner, or even just a mid-afternoon snack paired with a glass of wine.
20. A toast with the rain outside
Nothing beats the feeling of being away from the rain in a cozy place. And if you add drinks to the mix, even better!
My favorite bar in the city for these kinds of days is, without a doubt, Bonaparte Downtown. The atmosphere is very cozy and the drinks are great.
However, there are other options, such as Capela Incomum or the Big Bad Bank Bar, for example.
21. Escape from Porto
Is it raining in Porto? Then it might be an option to consider visiting other places relatively close by on a day trip.
The truth is that if the weather is bad in Porto, it’s probably not that great in these places too, given the short distance between them. But it doesn’t hurt to try and check the weather forecast.
My suggestions for shorter day trips from Porto (1h30 car journey maximum) include:
22. Learn how to make pastel de nata (custard tart)
There aren’t many desserts and sweets that represent Portugal as well as the pastel de nata. But how many times have you tried to make a pastel de nata from scratch?

It’s the perfect experience for friends, families, or even team-building events, as you can play in groups from 3 people to much larger teams.
