Looking for the best cafes in Porto? Then you’re in the right place. I live in Porto, and one of my favorite things to do is discover new coffee shops.

I’m always on the lookout for Porto’s newest cafés, but I also have a list of favorites I’ll happily visit over and over again. That’s exactly what you’ll find in this gcauide.

Over the years, I’ve explored cafés all across the city, and this guide brings together the ones I genuinely recommend. Some are well known and deserve every bit of the hype. Others are neighborhood favorites that don’t always make it into the typical travel guides.

Every café in this guide is somewhere I’ve personally visited, and most are places I keep returning to. I chose them based on the quality of the coffee and food, the atmosphere, and whether I’d genuinely recommend them to a friend visiting Porto.

Porto’s café scene has changed enormously over the last few years. Alongside the city’s historic cafés, you’ll now find excellent specialty coffee shops, creative brunch spots, artisan bakeries, and cafés serving influences from around the world.

That’s exactly why this guide includes a bit of everything… from century-old institutions to newer cafés that have quickly become local favorites.

1. Story

Story quickly became one of my favorite cafés in Porto, and it’s one I keep coming back to throughout the year.

Run by Ukrainians, it combines excellent specialty coffee with homemade dishes that are hard to find anywhere else in the city.

If it’s your first visit, don’t miss the syrniki, traditional Ukrainian pancakes that are absolutely worth trying. The French toast is another favorite of mine, and the cappuccino is, without a doubt, one of the best in Porto.

I also love coming here during winter, when the afternoon sun fills the café and makes it even cozier.

2. Hakko

Hakko is one of those cafés that proves size doesn’t matter. Tucked away on a quiet street, it’s easy to miss, but I’d happily make the detour every time.

It’s a bit more under the radar than some of Porto’s better-known coffee shops, and that’s exactly part of its charm.

The menu isn’t huge, but everything is done really well. If it’s your first visit, don’t miss the French toast. It’s one of my favorites in Porto and a reason enough to keep coming back.

🥐 Don’t miss: French toast
📍 Address: Rua do Rosário 313, 4050-522 Porto

3. Gather

Whenever the weather turns cold or rainy, Gather is one of the first cafés that comes to mind. Between the excellent specialty coffee, delicious food, and relaxed atmosphere, it’s the kind of place where it’s easy to lose track of time.

🌧 Rain in the forecast? Many of the cafés in this guide are perfect for a rainy day, but if the weather doesn’t cooperate, don’t miss my guide to the best things to do in Porto when it rains.

The French toast topped with crème brûlée is the star of the menu and something I always recommend ordering.

Their toasted sourdough is also excellent, and if you’re a coffee lover, you’ll appreciate that they take their specialty coffee just as seriously as the food.

Don’t miss the beautiful indoor terrace with its glass ceiling. It’s one of my favorite spots to sit on a rainy day.

🥐 Don’t miss: French toast with crème brûlée, toasted sourdough & specialty coffee

4. SOMA

If you’re looking for one of the best coffee shops in Porto with a modern feel, SOMA is an excellent choice. The space is bright, minimalist, and perfect whether you’re stopping by for breakfast or just a great cup of coffee.

The specialty coffee is excellent, but the food deserves just as much attention. Their sourdough bread is fantastic and comes with several creative toppings. If you’re unsure what to order, go for the scrambled eggs. They were so good last time I’ve tried them.

🥐 Don’t miss: Specialty coffee & sourdough bread
📍 Address: Rua de Adolfo Casais Monteiro 71, 4050-014 Porto

5. Esquires Coffee Porto

If I had to choose just one place for a cappuccino, Esquires Coffee Porto would be right at the top of my list.

I’ve been coming here for years, and it’s still one of my favorite cafés in Porto. It’s especially cozy during winter, making it the perfect place to escape the cold with a warm drink.

The cappuccino is consistently excellent, and I always look forward to seeing the latte art.

While the cakes are also worth trying, especially the carrot cake, my go to order is the bolo do caco toast.

If the weather is nice, grab a table on the terrace and enjoy a bit of people watching. They also have another location on Rua Miguel Bombarda with a much larger terrace, but I still prefer the original one. It simply feels more welcoming.

🥐 Don’t miss: Bolo do caco toast, cappuccino
📍 Address: Rua de 31 de Janeiro 215, 4000-543 Porto
🌿 Outdoor seating: Yes, perfect for people watching

6. 7g roaster

Hidden away in Vila Nova de Gaia, 7G Roaster is one of those places that’s worth crossing the river for. It may not be as well-known as some of the best coffee shops in Porto, but if you appreciate great coffee, this is a place you shouldn’t miss.

I’ve tried quite a bit of the menu over the years, from cakes and pancakes to their generous toasts. Everything has been consistently good, but these days I usually keep it simple with a toast and a cappuccino.

The coffee is the real reason I keep coming back, and I’d easily rank it among the best in the Porto area.

7. Bicho

Bicho is currently one of my favorite cafés in Porto, and one I find myself recommending again and again.

It has a minimalist design, but the atmosphere feels warm and welcoming. I especially love coming here during winter, when the morning sun fills the space.

The menu changes every month, which means there’s always something new to try. It’s one of the reasons I keep coming back.

The specialty coffee is excellent, the staff is always incredibly friendly, and the sourdough bread is some of the best you’ll find in Porto. If you’re planning to visit on a weekend, try to arrive early as it gets busy very quickly and is only open until 4 pm.

🥐 Don’t miss: Monthly specials & sourdough bread

8. Noshi Coffee

If you’re looking for a healthier brunch in Porto, Noshi is always a great choice.

It’s one of those cafés I keep coming back to when I want something fresh without compromising on flavor. Whether you’re stopping by for breakfast, brunch, or even lunch, there’s plenty to choose from.

I’ve tried quite a few dishes over the years, but I always end up recommending the açaí bowl and the toast with cream cheese, honey, and fresh berries.

Another reason I like Noshi is that it’s open on Sunday afternoons, when many cafés around Porto have already closed.

On sunny days, the outdoor seating is also a lovely place to relax.

📍 Address: Rua do Carmo 11 12, 4050-164 Porto
🌿 Outdoor seating: Yes (on the street)
🏆 Best for: Healthy brunch

9. Nicolau

Nicolau has become one of the most popular brunch spots in Porto, and after several visits, I can see why.

The menu is extensive, with everything from breakfast and brunch to lunch and dinner, making it a reliable choice no matter what time of day you’re visiting.

Whenever I come here, I almost always order the Red Velvet Pancakes or the Nicolau Pancakes. They may not be the fluffiest pancakes in Porto, but they’re packed with flavor and are the dishes I recommend to anyone visiting for the first time.

If you don’t feel like waiting for a table in downtown Porto, check out Amélia, their sister café in Foz. It has a very similar menu, a much more relaxed atmosphere, and a lovely outdoor seating area.

🥐 Don’t miss: Red Velvet Pancakes & Nicolau Pancakes
📍 Address: Largo de Alberto Pimentel 4, 4050-214 Porto
🌿Outdoor seating: Yes, on a pedestrian street (Amélia also has outdoor seating)

10. Breakfast Lovers

Whenever I’m craving pancakes, Breakfast Lovers is always high on my list. It’s not the cheapest brunch in Porto, but I’d happily pay a little extra for pancakes this good. Their pancakes are easily some of the fluffiest I’ve had in the city.

The coffee is also excellent, especially the pumpkin spice latte when it’s available. If you’re feeling hungry, don’t skip the egg toasts either.

My only complaint is that it closes quite early on weekends, which means I don’t get to visit as often as I’d like. If you’d like a closer look, you can check out my full video review of Breakfast Lovers.

🥐 Don’t miss: Fluffy pancakes, Pumpkin Spice Latte & egg toasts
📍Address: Rua da Alegria 87, 4000-042 Porto or Rua de 31 de Janeiro 130, 4000-427 Porto

Garden Balthazar is one of those places I often recommend when someone asks for a brunch spot with plenty of choice.

The space is large, it’s usually easy to get a table, and the menu is extensive, making it a great option whether you’re visiting for brunch, lunch, or even dinner.

I’ve been here countless times over the years. They used to serve some incredible red velvet pancakes that I still miss, but thankfully, there are still plenty of reasons to come back.

If you’re visiting later in the day, I highly recommend the shrimp tacos. They’re one of my favorite dishes on the menu.

📍 Address: Av. de Rodrigues de Freitas 429, 4000-423 Porto
🌿 Outdoor seating: Yes (on the street)
🏆 Best for: All-day brunch

12. Mila

Mila is easily one of the cutest cafés in Porto. It’s a small space, but that’s part of its charm. Check out my full review of Mila.

If you’re lucky enough to grab one of the tables by the window, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee while watching the city go by.

While the coffee is excellent, it’s the pastries that keep bringing me back. The laminated pastries are outstanding.

I still think about the coconut pastry I tried there, and the mortadella and pesto focaccia is another favorite whenever I’m after something savory. Just keep in mind that opening hours are a bit more limited on weekends, so it’s worth planning your visit.

🥐 Don’t miss: Puff pastries
📍 Address: Rua do Bonjardim 448, 4000-125 Porto

13. Eleven Lab Concept

Eleven Lab has been one of my favorite brunch spots in Porto for years, mainly because of its pancakes. They’ve always been incredibly fluffy, and they’re still some of the best you’ll find in the city.

The menu has changed quite a bit over time, and these days many of the pancakes include banana, which I hate. Even so, I still recommend it because the quality is consistently good.

Beyond the pancakes, you’ll also find delicious fruit bowls and some lunch options.

There are two locations in Porto, but whenever the weather is nice, I always choose the one by the Douro River. The terrace has beautiful views and makes the whole experience even better.

💡 Love outdoor terraces? Don’t miss my roundup of the best rooftop bars and terraces in Porto.

🏆 Best for: Pancakes

14. LM Art Kitchen

LM Art Kitchen is one of those places that’s easy to recommend because it has something for everyone.

The menu is extensive, making it a great choice whether you’re in the mood for brunch, lunch, or just coffee and something sweet.

The pancakes are delicious and fluffy, but one of the biggest highlights is the space itself. On sunny days, I always try to grab a table on one of the two terraces, either in the peaceful inner courtyard or overlooking Rua de Cedofeita.

🥐 Don’t miss: Fluffy pancakes
📍 Address: Rua de Cedofeita 175, 4050-179 Porto (plus other locations around the city)
🌿 Outdoor seating: Yes, two terraces

15. Rosi

Rosi is another café with Ukrainian roots, and it’s a place I’d recommend if you’re looking to try something a little different.

The atmosphere is relaxed, the coffee is excellent, and it has quickly become one of my favorite spots for a slower breakfast.

If it’s your first visit, make sure you order the syrniki, traditional Ukrainian pancakes.. Pair them with one of their coffee drinks, and you’ve got the perfect start to the day.

🥐 Don’t miss: Syrniki & specialty coffee
📍 Address: Rua do Rosário 281, 4050-370 Porto

16. CA Downtown

CA Downtown is one of the trendiest brunch spots in Porto, so don’t be surprised if there’s a wait on weekends. The stylish space and consistently good coffee make it well worth the visit.

The crème brûlée French toast was my favorite dish. It’s absolutely delicious, but also incredibly indulgent, so I’d recommend sharing it if you’re not a fan of very sweet desserts.

If you’d like to see more of the space and the food, you can also check out my full video review.

🥐 Don’t miss: Crème brûlée French toast
📍 Address: Praça de Carlos Alberto 89, 4050-158 Porto

17. Majestic Café

No list of the best cafes in Porto would be complete without Majestic Café. It’s one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a place that almost every first-time visitor wants to experience.

SEE ALSO  Central Portugal: What to visit in Santa Comba Dão & Penacova

Even after all these years, I still think it’s worth stepping inside just to admire its stunning interior.

Porto O que visitar Rua Santa Catarina Majestic Caffé

I don’t come here very often because prices are definitely on the higher side. Even so, I always recommend visiting at least once.

The interior is absolutely stunning, and it’s one of those places that’s worth experiencing even if you only stop for a coffee. If you decide to order something, the rabanada (a kind of French toast) is one of the highlights on the menu.

💡Exploring downtown Porto? This café is also included in my ultimate Porto itinerary, together with other must-see attractions within walking distance.

🥐 Don’t miss: Rabanada

You can’t talk about Porto’s café scene without mentioning Leitaria Quinta do Paço. Open for over a century, it’s one of the city’s most iconic pastry shops and the place every local will point you to when you’re craving an éclair.

Leitaria Quinta do Paco

There are dozens of flavors to choose from, but I always recommend keeping it classic or trying the salted caramel éclair, which is one of my favorites.

While there are several locations across Porto, I still have a soft spot for the original shop in downtown. If the weather is nice, grab a table on the terrace and enjoy one of Porto’s most beloved pastries.

🥐 Don’t miss: Salted caramel éclair

PORTO CAFÉ TIPS

☀️ Most brunch cafés get busy after 10:30 am on weekends.
🍽️ Traditional cafés usually serve at the table.
🥐 If you want fresh pastéis de nata, visit Manteigaria when the bell rings. It means a new batch has just come out of the oven.
🕒 Many cafés close surprisingly early on Sundays.
💳 Carry a payment card or some cash. A few traditional bakeries may have a minimum spend for card payments.

19. Padaria Ribeiro

Padaria Ribeiro has been part of Porto’s history since the 19th century and is still one of the city’s most iconic bakeries. While you’ll find several locations across Porto, I usually stop by the original shop downtown whenever I’m nearby.

If it’s your first visit, don’t overthink your order. Simply ask for a lanche misto, one of the bakery’s signature snacks that locals have been enjoying for generations. Before you leave, pick up a bag of their Primaveras biscuits. They’re my favorite and make a great souvenir to take home.

🥐 Don’t miss: Lanche misto & Primaveras biscuits
📍Address: Praça Guilherme Gomes Fernandes 21, Porto (plus several other locations across the city)
🌿 Outdoor seating: Yes, at the downtown location

20. Café Guarany

Café Guarany is another historic institution that deserves a place on this list. Located on Avenida dos Aliados, it has been welcoming locals and visitors for decades and remains one of the city’s most elegant cafés.

Porto O que visitar Avenida dos Aliados

Unlike some of Porto’s historic cafés, Guarany isn’t just somewhere to stop for a coffee.

📍 Address: Avenida dos Aliados 85, 4000-066 Porto

21. A Brasileira

A Brasileira is another Porto classic that I’d recommend more for the experience than the food itself. Housed in a beautifully restored historic building, it’s one of those cafés where the atmosphere is more memorable than the food.

It’s an easy stop while exploring downtown Porto. Grab a coffee, take a seat, and enjoy one of the city’s most beautiful and traditional cafés.

📍 Address: Rua do Bonjardim 116, 4000-440 Porto
🌿 Outdoor seating: Yes (on the street)

22. Confeitaria do Bolhão

If you’d like to experience a more traditional side of Porto’s café culture, make sure to stop by Confeitaria do Bolhão. It’s one of those places that has stood the test of time and is still a favorite among locals looking for a classic Portuguese breakfast or afternoon snack.

📍 Address: Rua Formosa 339, 4000-252 Porto

23. Maurícia

Maurícia isn’t located in Downtown Porto, but I simply couldn’t leave it out. It’s not the kind of place you’ll find in many travel guides.

Instead, it’s a traditional pastry shop where locals have been stopping for breakfast and an afternoon snack for years.

🥐 Don’t miss: Egg filled croissants
📍 Address: Rua de Brito Capelo 907, 4450-068 Matosinhos

24. Manteigaria

Whenever I’m craving a pastel de nata, Manteigaria is usually my first choice. Originally from Lisbon, it has become my go-to place in Porto for this iconic Portuguese pastry. Honestly, I could happily eat one of their custard tarts every day.

One of the things I love most is that every time a fresh batch comes out of the oven, a bell rings to let everyone know. It’s hard to resist following the smell inside.

The only downside is that it’s almost always busy, especially during peak hours. You need to order before finding a table, and seating isn’t always guaranteed, but the custard tarts are absolutely worth the wait.

If I had to recommend just one place for a pastel de nata in Porto, this would be it.

🥐 Don’t miss: Freshly baked pastel de nata
📍Address: Rua de Alexandre Braga 24, 4000-049 Porto (plus several other locations around the city)
🌿 Outdoor seating: Yes (on the street)

25. Confeitaria Chicana

If you want to experience a café that’s almost exclusively frequented by locals, head to Confeitaria Chicana.

Don’t expect trendy interiors or specialty coffee. This is the kind of traditional Portuguese café that’s been serving the neighborhood for years, and that’s exactly why I love it.

The croissants are the real highlight here and, in my opinion, some of the best in Porto. Pair one with a simple toast and a coffee, and you’ll understand why this place has such a loyal local following.

📍 Address: Av. de Rodrigues de Freitas 36, 4300-096 Porto

26. BUuh!

Buuh! is one of those cafés that immediately makes you feel at home. It’s run by a lovely older couple, and that warm, welcoming atmosphere is one of the main reasons I enjoy coming back, especially during the colder months.

The homemade cakes are always a safe choice, and I also recommend trying one of their toasts alongside a coffee.

It’s one of the few cafés in Porto where I wouldn’t hesitate to open my laptop, even on weekends, if I wanted to get a bit of work done.

🥐 Don’t miss: Homemade cakes & toasts

27. Carlotta Cake Boutique

If you ask me where to find the best cakes in Porto, Carlotta Cake Boutique will always be one of my first recommendations. Originally from Brazil, this bakery serves some of the most beautiful and delicious cakes I’ve tried in the city.

I’ve tasted quite a few flavors over the years, but I keep coming back for the red velvet, the berry cake, and the carrot cake with brigadeiro frosting. Cake flavors change daily.

The slices aren’t cheap, but I still think they’re worth it.

🥐 Don’t miss: Red Velvet cake, berry cake & carrot cake with brigadeiro
📍 Address: Rua Fonte da Luz 183, 4150-743 Porto (plus locations in downtown Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia)

29. Say Cheesecake! & Co.

If you’re a cheesecake lover, you simply can’t miss Say Cheesecake! & Co. As the name suggests, cheesecake is the star of the menu, with plenty of flavors and toppings to choose from.

🥐 Don’t miss: Cheesecake
📍 Address: Rua do Almada 21, 4050-036 Porto

Cookie Club isn’t really a café, but I couldn’t leave it off this list. If you’re wondering where to find the best cookies in Porto, this is the place.

The space is tiny, with just a few outdoor tables, but the cookies are worth every bite. They’re thick, gooey, and freshly baked, making them the perfect sweet treat while exploring Cedofeita.

Whenever I’m craving cookies, I don’t even think twice about where to go.

🥐 Don’t miss: Freshly baked cookies
📍 Address: Rua de Cedofeita 267, 4050-180 Porto
🌿 Outdoor seating: Yes, a few outdoor tables

31. MiBa Artisanal Bakery

If puff pastries and artisan bread are your thing, make sure to add MiBa Artisanal Bakery to your list. It’s one of my favorite bakeries in Porto for freshly baked pastries, and I often stop by just to pick up some bread to take home.

Seating is quite limited, so I usually grab everything to go. The laminated pastries are excellent, the slow fermented sourdough bread is some of the best I’ve tried in Porto, and the coffee is also surprisingly good.

🥐 Don’t miss: Puff pastries & slow-fermented sourdough bread
📍 Address: Rua de Cedofeita 385, 4050-181 Porto

» Honorable mentions

These cafés didn’t quite make my list of absolute favorites, but I still think they’re worth mentioning.

Whether it’s because of their atmosphere, a specific dish, or simply because they’re popular with both locals and visitors, they’re all solid options depending on what you’re looking for.

32. Zenith Caffè

Zenith is one of the best-known brunch cafés in Porto, and you’ll probably come across it while researching where to eat in the city. The portions are generous, the menu is extensive, and the space is undeniably Instagram-worthy.

It’s not my go-to brunch spot, but I still think it deserves an honorable mention.

If it’s your first visit, I’d recommend the French toast, although you’ll also find plenty of savory options, including toasts, salads, and tapiocas.

🥐 Don’t miss: French toast
📍 Address: Praça de Carlos Alberto 86, 4050-158 Porto

35. Negra Café

Negra Café is one of those places that’s almost always buzzing. The menu is huge, with everything from açaí bowls and pancakes to salads, toasts, cakes, and brunch dishes, making it a reliable option for almost any craving.

Best Cafes in Porto Negra

While it isn’t my favorite café in Porto for either coffee or food, I do find myself coming back from time to time.

The atmosphere is particularly cozy during winter, and it’s one of the few brunch cafés that stays open later on weekends.

If you enjoy the concept, you should also check out Wilson Café, which belongs to the same group and has a very similar vibe with a slightly different menu.

📍 Address: Rua de Sá da Bandeira 673, 4000-272 Porto (plus several other locations across the city)
🌿 Outdoor seating: Yes (in their location in Rua Sá da Bandeira)

36. Apartamento Café

Apartamento Café is tucked away on a quieter stretch of Rua de Cedofeita and is one of those places I think deserves more attention.

One thing that immediately stands out is the value for money, which is becoming increasingly rare among Porto’s brunch cafés.

The menu is extensive, but I’d recommend building your own pancake stack and pairing it with a cappuccino.

The pancakes are large and fluffy, so two were more than enough for me. I also really like the indoor courtyard, which makes it a cozy spot all year round.

📍 Address: Rua de Cedofeita 607, Porto
🌿 Outdoor seating: Yes, a lovely indoor courtyard

A Certain Café is one of Porto’s newer specialty coffee shops, and I really enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. The space feels bright and modern, and on sunny winter mornings the natural light makes it an especially pleasant place to spend a couple of hours.

A Certain Cafe

I really enjoyed both the toast and the pancake, although the latter is closer to a cake than a traditional fluffy pancake. If you’re after a cafe in a relaxed setting, it’s definitely worth adding to your list.

Final thoughts

I hope this guide helps you discover some of the best cafes in Porto, whether you’re looking for excellent specialty coffee, a cozy brunch spot, or a hidden gem away from the tourist crowds.

I’ll keep updating this list as new cafés open and I discover new favorites around the city.

If you’re planning a trip to Porto, make sure to also check out my guides to the best restaurants in Porto, my Porto itinerary, the best places in Porto to enjoy a drink with a view, and what to do in Porto when it rains. Together, they’ll help you plan an unforgettable trip to Porto.

Have you visited any of these cafés? Or is there a favorite coffee shop you think deserves a place on this list? Let me know in the comments below. I’m always looking for new places to try!
