I visited Kuala Lumpur in 2023 and loved every moment. From iconic landmarks to bustling night markets, this city is so exciting. So, I’ve put together my favourite travel tips from my time exploring the city to help you make the most of your visit. These tips also include helpful insights from my time exploring other cities in Malaysia.
From public transport and top food spots to local customs, this Kuala Lumpur guide covers all the essentials. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned explorer, these insights will help you get the best out of your trip.

1. Prepare for Hot and Humid Weather Year-Round (and Sudden Rain)
Kuala Lumpur has a tropical climate, which means hot, humid conditions year-round. Temperatures often hover around 30°C (86°F), so light, breathable clothing is essential.
Pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun during daytime exploration. The sun in Kuala Lumpur (and overall Malaysia) is no joke!
Even though temperatures are often high, sudden rain showers are common. This is especially true during the rainy season, which usually occurs from March to April, September and November. Always carry a compact umbrella or a lightweight rain jacket in your daypack.
I visited in early June and got lucky with rain. It rained here and there, but the rain never lasted long enough to disrupt my plans. When visiting Kuala Lumpur, a quick downpour can easily disrupt your plans, so it’s best to be prepared.
2. Use Malaysian Ringgit and Carry Some Cash
For a seamless trip to Kuala Lumpur, have Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) on hand. Although most hotels and large restaurants accept credit cards, smaller vendors, street food stalls, and markets often prefer cash.
This is one of the important things to know before going to Kuala Lumpur to avoid inconveniences.
Exchange your currency at reputable exchange counters or withdraw MYR from ATMs for fair rates. I prefer the last one, to be honest. When I visited, I got to withdraw money without paying extra fees from these banks: HSBC, Maybank or CIMB Bank.
💡 EXTRA TIP: To make purchases with a currency other than the one I usually use (Euro), I always use the Revolut card, which has many advantages. This is my go-to travel debit card since it does not charge extra fees for using a different currency.
3. Dress Appropriately for Visiting Religious Sites
Visiting Kuala Lumpur isn’t complete without exploring its iconic religious sites like the Batu Caves and mosques. However, respectful dress is a must.
Cover your shoulders and knees, and women should consider carrying a lightweight scarf to cover their heads if needed.
Proper attire is often checked before entry. If you forget, many religious sites provide sarongs or scarves for a small fee. For example, they provide clothes at the Batu Caves (for a fee) or Wilayah Mosque (for free).

I found using the KL Sentral station as a hub during my visit was a game changer. For travellers looking for efficient and budget-friendly ways to get around, using public transport is a top travel tip for Kuala Lumpur.
5. Opt for Grab for Convenience
If public transport doesn’t fit your schedule, the Grab app is a great alternative when travelling to Kuala Lumpur. Grab is a kind of Uber in Southeast Asia.
It’s widely used and usually cheaper than traditional taxis. Grab offers cash and card payment options, making it a go-to choice for visitors.
During my Kuala Lumpur trip, I relied on Grab several times since it was rather cheap and super convenient! The app is user-friendly, and the fare estimates helped me budget effectively.
6. Stay Aware of Petty Crime and Safety Precautions
While visiting Kuala Lumpur, safety is generally not a concern. Nevertheless, it’s wise to stay alert, especially in crowded places (like anywhere else in the world!)
Petty crimes like pickpocketing can happen in busy markets and public transport areas, so keep your valuables secure.
I usually travel with a backpack that has a pocket that isn’t easily reachable (the pocket is located on the part of the backpack that touches my back). This definitely has helped me feel safer while exploring bustling places around the world.

One of the highlights of Kuala Lumpur travel is its street food scene.
Jalan Alor is a must-visit for those seeking an authentic culinary experience. The area is bustling with stalls offering satay, char kway teow, nasi lemak, and more. This vibrant part of visiting Kuala Lumpur is perfect for adventurous foodies.
During my trip, trying Cik Noor Dim Sum at Jalan Alor was unforgettable. Bring cash and an appetite to make the most of this experience. It’s a top travel tip for Kuala Lumpur to indulge in its street food culture.
8. Try Popular Local Dishes at Hawker Centres
No Kuala Lumpur guide would be complete without highlighting the local hawker centres. These spots offer affordable meals and an authentic taste of Malaysia. Be sure to try dishes like roti canai, Hainanese chicken rice, and, of course, the national dish, nasi lemak.
During my trip to Kuala Lumpur, I found that the hawker centres were perfect for sampling a range of cuisines all in one place.
9. Bring a Type G Power Adapter for Electronics
One of the essential travel tips for Kuala Lumpur is to bring a Type G power adapter for your electronics. Malaysia uses 240V outlets, similar to the UK, so having an adapter ensures your devices stay powered throughout your visit.
If you travel frequently, invest in a good universal adapter so you don’t have to worry about this issue anymore.
10. Connect to the Internet Easily with a Local SIM Card
While free Wi-Fi is common in hotels and cafes, a local SIM card with a data plan is recommended for those visiting Kuala Lumpur. This allows you to use apps like Google Maps or Grab with ease and stay connected on the go.
Using a local SIM card during my Kuala Lumpur travel made navigating and exploring much more convenient. It’s a crucial part of any Kuala Lumpur guide to stay connected and have reliable data access.
During my time in Kuala Lumpur, I purchased an eSIM from Celcom. You can easily top-up at any 7-Eleven. You can also choose a roaming mobile data plan, which works seamlessly across many Southeast Asian countries.
For example, this e-SIM Roaming Mobile Data Plan can be purchased even before you arrive in Malaysia and the options are quite cheap.
11. Choose Accommodation Close to Public Transport
When planning your Kuala Lumpur itinerary, choosing accommodation near public transport hubs, such as Bukit Bintang or KLCC, can make exploring the city much easier. These areas provide easy access to attractions and dining spots.
I recommend Wyndham Suites KLCC. Not only were the rooms amazing (making you feel home away from home), but it is also very central. Plus, they provide a shuttle service to some points of interest in the city.
12. Stay Hydrated to Beat the Humid Climate
One of the top travel tips for Kuala Lumpur is to stay hydrated due to the city’s high humidity. Believe me, it’s hot as hell. Carry a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the day and prevent dehydration. Most hotels and cafes offer filtered water stations.
This tip will help you keep your energy up while exploring this bustling city.
13. Allow Extra Time for Travel During Peak Traffic
Traffic congestion is common during peak hours in Kuala Lumpur, especially from 7–9 AM and 5–7 PM. Allow extra time when planning your travel to avoid delays. Public transport can also be more crowded during these times.
For example, I remember being stuck in traffic inside a Grab ride while trying to get to KL Tower in time for sunset. Plan and travel with extra time to spare during rush hour.
14. Alcohol Is Available but it’s Expensive
Alcohol is available in Kuala Lumpur but can be expensive due to high taxes. Remember that Malaysia is mostly a Muslim country. Bars and restaurants in popular areas like Bukit Bintang may have higher prices for cocktails and imported drinks.
However, be aware that one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur is having a drink at one of the city’s many amazing rooftop bars. So, if travelling on a budget, avoid drinking alcohol so you can save for a special moment at one of these rooftop bars.
I visited Helipad Lounge which is a rooftop bar located on a helipad. Entrance costs 100 MYR (~20€), but you get two drinks from a pre-defined drinks list. The atmosphere of the bar is amazing. Plus, the 360º views of the city make it one of the most beautiful places in Kuala Lumpur.
15. Bargain at Markets but Not in Stores
Bargaining is common in street markets like Petaling Street but not in fixed-price stores or shopping malls. Approach negotiations with a smile and a friendly attitude to get the best prices.
I found that engaging with vendors while bargaining added to the visiting Kuala Lumpur experience. It’s one of those things to know before going to Kuala Lumpur that helps you score unique souvenirs at reasonable prices.
16. Plan for Festivals and Public Holidays for Unique Experiences
Travel to Kuala Lumpur during festivals like Chinese New Year or Thaipusam offers a rich cultural experience but also larger crowds. Check the local holiday calendar to plan your itinerary around these events.

Tipping is not obligatory in Kuala Lumpur, but it’s appreciated for good service. Most restaurants add a service charge, but leaving some change or rounding up the bill is a kind gesture.

Crossing roads in Kuala Lumpur can be challenging due to heavy traffic. Use designated pedestrian crossings, and make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before crossing.
Following this tip kept me safe, especially in areas with chaotic traffic (if it’s your first time in Asia, you’ll be surprised at how chaotic it gets).

Visiting Kuala Lumpur wouldn’t be complete without experiencing its rooftop bars. Popular spots like Heli Lounge Bar and SkyBar at Traders Hotel offer breathtaking views of the city skyline.
Enjoying a drink at Helipad Lounge was a memorable part of my Kuala Lumpur experience. This incredible bar is a helipad during the day and has 360º views of the city. It was the perfect way to relax after a day of sightseeing.

26. Kuala Lumpur Is a Multi-Cultural Melting Pot
Kuala Lumpur travel offers a unique blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures. This diversity is evident in the city’s food, festivals, and architecture.

27. Don’t Drink Tap Water
Avoid drinking tap water in Kuala Lumpur. Stick to bottled or filtered water to ensure you stay safe and healthy during your visit (even when washing your teeth!)
Even though some locals actually drink tap water, I wouldn’t risk it.
28. Drug Offenses Can Lead to Severe Penalties, Including the Death Penalty
